Coton U13 Girls vs Stanground Sports, Stanground FC (League)

A trip up to Peterborough is never easy.. historically the trip brings tough, physical matches and our Girls know we need to play at our best to be competitive. Stanground, despite a mixed season so far, have held us to task on our last two encounters, with Stanground coming out on top. With intensity from the outset, some immediate pressure from the Coton midfield put Stanground on the back foot. Ball spilling loose, Juliet wasted no time in pouncing and getting in behind the defense to put her mark on the scoreboard with just 2 mins on the clock. Perhaps stunned by the goal, Stanground sat back to consolidate their defensive effort. This only served to invite Coton in to camp in their final third, applying wave after wave of pressure. Another two shots on from Julie, including one that just skimmed past the right upright, and a belter from India after a cute 1-2 with Emilia, had Stanground visibly rattled. Pressuring the keep at kick out, India snaffled up the wayward kick and drove straight at the Keep, ruthlessly finishing with a boomer to bring up Coton’s second. It was clear that Coton had a taste for it today. Coton continued the barrage, playing the remainder of the half deep in Stanground territory, pressuring and frustrating home side. Madds, always in the action put in a snap kick. The Keep dove to deflect the ball free only to have India send it to the back of the net for her double. Madds, in the action again, sent in a dangerous corner.. a cheeky flick on from Emilia put her on the scoresheet and took Coton into the break 4 clear.

Beginning right where they left off, the second half started with a fizz. Katty gathered the ball in midfield to put Pauline in behind the Stanground defense. Pauline threaded a clever ball through the last defender’s legs to find Mads on-the-spot for a clinical finish. Shannon continued as the puppet-master, directing play out to Frosso on the left, through the channels to find Julie and out right to engage India. Lia, making sure Char had very little to do in goal, worked confidently to marshal the defensive effort, claiming and distributing the ball on the occasions it made it into Coton’s half. Meanwhile, Tesni, acted as the glue between defense and midfield, composed on the ball, dispossessing Stanground and distributing intelligently. Emilia, India and Shannon exploited the right, with Emilia getting a number of shots off, and claiming a second for her persistent efforts. Keen to lead the season’s goal scoring tally, Madds finished another two to bring up her hatrick. Playing advanced, Bam harassed the Stanground defense time and time again, until, from an impossible angle, she snuck a blinder into the back of the net, bringing up her first for the season. Not wanting to be left out, and desperate to advance her record of hitting the post during every match this season, Ellen managed to round it out by striking the crossbar, and then finishing in the back of the net to bring up her first for the season also. Now 8 games in, and with 8 different scorers on the tally sheet, we’re shaping into a team with threats all over the pitch. Huge respect must go to the Stanground team who battled to the end, and special mention must go to the amazing quality of the pitch that enabled such expansive football. Well played Girls!

Coton U13 Girls vs Chesterton Eagles, Coton Rec (League)

Losses are few and far between for Coton, but when faced with one, we can be counted on to bounce back with venom the following week. Today was no different, with the intensity that was missing last week was now displayed in spades right from the opening whistle. Chesterton, feeling the immediate pressure, were drawn centrally towards Shannon, who laid a ball off laterally finding Frosso on the front foot. A swift, confident pass into space allowed Julie to turn a 50:50 into an 80:20 as she poked the ball forwards, beating two Chesterton players and homing in on goal. Shoulder to shoulder with the Chesterton centre back, Julie nudged ahead and finished in the top left to put Coton on the board with just 3 mins played. Sensing that Chesterton were rattled, Julie, India and Frosso pressured the kick out, with Julie snaffling the ball and putting it high, just over the cross bar. As the half wore on, the trio of Bam, Frosso and Julie continued to work the left flank, creating chances again and again, and keeping the pressure on Chesterton. The combination of Shannon picking the Chesterton plays and winning the midfield, and Madds cutting the Eagles attack off at the head, made transit down the centre of the park tough for Chesterton. There were many ‘proud coach’ moments during the match, one such moment saw Madds driving the ball into the Eagles box only to find a wall of defense. Pulling a full 180, Madds played backwards finding Indy who took the ball to the corner, drawing out the defense, and put a cross in behind the defensive line for Madds to then pounce on. Some intelligent play, creating a chance out of nothing, and lovely to watch. Such is the tenacity of this Chesterton side, moments later, in front of our box, Alex stole an opportunity from a ‘soft’ Coton pass and was clinical with a top-drawer finish to level the match.

Frosso, having a blinder, probed the Chesterton box out left, but to no avail. Gathering the spilled ball she played centrally to find Katty. In classic Katty style, calm as a cucumber, Katty spotted Madds creating space for a shot on goal and fed the ball to her perfectly. Madds put in a dipping long-range shot, the type any Keep hates. Shannon, sensing an opportunity, followed the ball in and pounced on the ball as it glanced free to edge Coton into the lead as the half drew to a close.

The second half started right where the first left off. Intensity from the outset, both teams strived to get that next score, one that would decide the match. Coton, calm but structured, again played more intelligent football. Ellen and Lia set the platform at the back, with Ellen marshalling the offside line, claiming a couple of important successes. Showing confidence on the ball, Bam pulled the L-turn out of her sleeve to lose her opposite number, and Ellen make a formidable and unchallenged run 35m up the guts, much to the consternation of the Eagles midfield who she scythed through.

Chesterton began to run the changes, trying to find any advantage. With no route through the centre Chesterton were forced to play the long ball. In response, Emilia turned up the physicality to repel advances down her side and acting as a sweeper when needed. Hammering it home, she and her partner in crime, India, continued to work the right wing and threaten Chesterton. Finally the breakthrough came as Madds took the ball off a pinpoint Tesni pass, turned out and peeled the ball over the foot of the encroaching Eagles defense to put India in on the goal. Like an unstoppable force, India bore down on the Eagles goal, creating a 1 v 1 with the Keep, and belting in an outswinger that crossed in front of the keep and hit the top left corner. The goal was of a rare quality and won’t be forgotten any time soon. As Chesterton threw caution to the wind and piled forward they created several nail biting chances, piercing our defense on a number of occasions. Cha, dominant and defiant in goal, plucked the ball from the air in no less than three occasions and saved a certain goal from the Chesterton No 9 with a fully-horizontal, full stretched. Coton U13 Girls vs Netherton, Netherton FC (Cup)

After a few weeks off, Coton were hosted by Netherton for the first round of the much-anticipated Cup. Adapting to the greasy surface, both teams started scrappily. A through ball from Mads put Julie in on goal with the first real chance of the match. Out of nowhere, at full stretch, the Netherton Keep got a hand to the ball to push it wide. Netherton focusing on being first to the ball, started to dominate the midfield. Eventually, this dominance paid off, giving their No 9 a handful of shots on the Coton goal. Cha, up to the task, snaffled what came through. Capitalising on an overload of numbers in front of the box, Netherton played laterally into space, allowing a solid strike in-off the upright to draw first blood. A flurry of missed passes and loose control meant it was going to be ‘one of those days’, where, not for the lack of passion and effort, the roll of the ball wasn’t going to comply and go our way. Just before half time Netherton had another opportunity, this time from the penalty spot. Cha, picking the direction to perfection, deflected the ball clear, saving the penalty, with Emilia clearing up the loose ball. Moments later Netherton were in on goal again, with Cha making the first up save, however the Netherton forward was first to the loose ball, taking their team into the break 2 points clear.

The second half saw the tables even up as Coton strove to play ball to feet and plug the midfield. Some nice 1-2’s down the left with Mads and Shannon spliced open Netherton. Shannon and Bam stepped up to meet the high ball in the central areas from the goal kick, claiming the ball for Coton. Tesni dug her heels in to steady the midfield, bringing stability and range, while Ami did her part down the left to stop the Netherton advance. Lia put in a gritty performance, growing in physicality as the match wore on. Intent on getting shots on goal, Emilia and India worked hard to advance the ball down the right, giving India a long range shot on goal. For all money it looked like Coton was going to be on the scoreboard, but alas the ball drifted wide. Julie pushed three to the left, and then another three just within the Keeps reach. Mads stormed down the left and peppered the Keep with several more; meanwhile Shannon found space centrally and launched two more at the Keep. Emptying their bag of tricks, both Shannon and India attempted to lob the Keep. Not wanting to be left out, Emilia drove down the right and put a dig in, and Ellen put in a long-range speculator. Each time, however, the Netherton Keep cemented herself further as player of the match, clinging tightly to a well-deserved clean sheet.

A flurry of uncharacteristic hand-ball’s saw not one, but four Girls join the ‘high-five hand ball club.’ One more goal from a bit of ping-pong in the box sealed the match for Netherton. Frustration and emotions ran high as the final whistle blew. Almost as rare as our Girls turning down a jelly snake, only twice since 2019 have our Girls walked off the pitch without a score. There was a palpable sense that, on a different day, with everything clicking, that the match could have gone the other way, and that some days the bounce of the ball just doesn’t go your way. Take nothing away from Netherton though, as they kept their cool and battled till the end, playing composed, passing football for the win. Best of luck for the rest of the Cup Girls!

Coton U13 Girls vs Cambridge City, City FC (League)

Coton U13 Girls travelled deep into the Fens to take on the mighty Cambridge City (AKA Haddenham Rovers) in the late kick-off this afternoon. City are a fantastic side, packed with individual talent so we knew our girls needed to be at their best today if we were to cope with the City threat from all quarters.

The game started with both teams looking up for it from the off. Our girls asked a couple of questions of the City defence early on, and great play out wide from Frosso gave Julie an early chance that their keeper dealt with well. City pressured our back line, looking to run through the gaps, but Ellen and Lia held strong centrally with Bam and Emilia mopping up the wide threat brilliantly. Both benches could tell this was going to be a nail-biter! A nice City combination in midfield let the City dynamo, Annabelle, in behind and she made no mistake with her strike, Charlotte getting a strong hand to it, but unfortunate with the deflection up off her face for the opening goal. City upped the pressure and only last-ditch clearances by Lia, and the onrushing Charlotte kept us from going further behind. But whilst us coaches were onto their second hand of nail biting, our girls made us feel very proud, Katty and Ellen staying calm as we began to put some moves together. Shannon, dancing through the tackles, slipped a neat ball through to Julie whose constant running was causing increasing alarm to the City defence, past her defender and still with the ball at her feet, the parents on our side-line were hoping for a Julie special thunder left foot we’ve seen so many times ripple the back of the net, but not this time…no, a calm right foot slotted into the corner and we were back level! City looked a little rattled, but were straight back at us from the kick-off. Emilia was tested with pace and physicality down her right side of the pitch, but this was a test she was built for, never giving an inch and making a series of tackles with follow-up passes throughout the game to free India who was starting to maraud down the wing, firing in crosses to Julie, Mads and Frosso, or cutting back to the delayed runs of Shannon on the edge. This time Emilia turned a promising City attack on its head with a ball up to India, slipped in to Mads, whose precise, defence-splitting first-time ball fell sweetly into Julie’s run and had our bench up on tiptoes (admittedly that’s still not very high). Julie fired her shot in at goal. Their keeper made a good save, but the bounce favoured Julie and she slotted home for her 2nd and we were ahead! Now it was a real tussle; a couple of tackles flying in from both teams, free kicks given (we should mention that ref Emily was exceptional, very fair to both sides), and both teams fully in battle mode. For all the City pressure and chances, somehow we didn’t concede. As the half drew to an end, a nice interchange drew the City defense into the left corner. An inside ball to Tes gave her a second of space to quickly snap a curling ball into the left, top corner, almost catching their keeper off guard, but winning a corner for her efforts. The resulting corner bobbled in the box, with coaches from both teams holding their breaths as City desperately tried again and again to clear it. Finally, City managed to clear their lines, but only as far as Lia who tried her luck from distance, not far over half way; a worldie up and over everyone, including the City goalie, caressing the back of the net. 1-3 at half time…surely this wasn’t going to be our day!?

2nd half and now City were playing into the sun. We needed to swap our Lino over, as his nerves were shot. But our group were enjoying themselves, back onto the pitch with big smiles and encouragement for each other. Coach Al’s pre-match warm up had given us a level of intensity that was not only necessary for a game like this, but also was bringing out the best of every player. Under a level of pressure and pace of game different to anything we’d experienced so far this season, our girls were thriving. A mix up in midfield and a missed clearance let Annabelle in again and she banged an unstoppable shot into the corner. The goal was top quality, but it didn’t seem to bother us. We dusted ourselves back down and went again. The game was open, nothing clear cut though. Katty’s twinkle toes fed Frosso on the left. And a great Mads run in behind caused a bit of panic in the City defence. Ami came on to hold the ball up up top and feed the midfield runs, as both teams looked for what would be that all important goal. How long left? A City shot off our bar! Can we get hold of it and slow it down? Another City effort, this time off the post. Nail biting for sure! Another cracking save as Charlotte at full stretch pushed one past the post. She was determined not to let this lead slip. Can’t be long now, surely? Julie and Mads tried their luck from distance. Was another goal coming? And which team would get it!? India never stopped running. Shannon, who had had an amazing and decisive presence in the middle took a ball to the stomach and was down, winded. Tes dropped back to sit in with Ellen and Lia as the minutes ticked, but were they ticking fast enough? Another Mads effort. City player after City player weaving in and out through us, but never quite far enough before the strong challenge came from our back line. And then that whistle…Phew!!

Girls, you were amazing today. So super proud. Make no mistake, you’ve just played an incredibly talented group, but you stood tall and deserved the points today! Well done! No games for a few weeks and we go again in November in the cup 👍⚽️

Shannon, dancing through the tackles, slipped a neat ball through to Julie whose constant running was causing increasing alarm to the City defence, past her defender and still with the ball at her feet, the parents on our side-line were hoping for a Julie special thunder left foot we’ve seen so many times ripple the back of the net, but not this time…no, a calm right foot slotted into the corner and we were back level! City looked a little rattled, but were straight back at us from the kick-off. Emilia was tested with pace and physicality down her right side of the pitch, but this was a test she was built for, never giving an inch and making a series of tackles with follow-up passes throughout the game to free India who was starting to maraud down the wing, firing in crosses to Julie, Mads and Frosso, or cutting back to the delayed runs of Shannon on the edge. This time Emilia turned a promising City attack on its head with a ball up to India, slipped in to Mads, whose precise, defence-splitting first-time ball fell sweetly into Julie’s run and had our bench up on tiptoes (admittedly that’s still not very high). Julie fired her shot in at goal. Their keeper made a good save, but the bounce favoured Julie and she slotted home for her 2nd and we were ahead! Now it was a real tussle; a couple of tackles flying in from both teams, free kicks given (we should mention that ref Emily was exceptional, very fair to both sides), and both teams fully in battle mode. For all the City pressure and chances, somehow we didn’t concede. As the half drew to an end, a nice interchange drew the City defense into the left corner. An inside ball to Tes gave her a second of space to quickly snap a curling ball into the left, top corner, almost catching their keeper off guard, but winning a corner for her efforts. The resulting corner bobbled in the box, with coaches from both teams holding their breaths as City desperately tried again and again to clear it. Finally, City managed to clear their lines, but only as far as Lia who tried her luck from distance, not far over half way; a worldie up and over everyone, including the City goalie, caressing the back of the net. 1-3 at half time…surely this wasn’t going to be our day!? 2nd half and now City were playing into the sun. We needed to swap our Lino over, as his nerves were shot. But our group were enjoying themselves, back onto the pitch with big smiles and encouragement for each other. Coach Al’s pre-match warm up had given us a level of intensity that was not only necessary for a game like this, but also was bringing out the best of every player. Under a level of pressure and pace of game different to anything we’d experienced so far this season, our girls were thriving. A mix up in midfield and a missed clearance let Annabelle in again and she banged an unstoppable shot into the corner. The goal was top quality, but it didn’t seem to bother us. We dusted ourselves back down and went again. The game was open, nothing clear cut though. Katty’s twinkle toes fed Frosso on the left. And a great Mads run in behind caused a bit of panic in the City defence. Ami came on to hold the ball up up top and feed the midfield runs, as both teams looked for what would be that all important goal. How long left? A City shot off our bar! Can we get hold of it and slow it down? Another City effort, this time off the post. Nail biting for sure! Another cracking save as Charlotte at full stretch pushed one past the post. She was determined not to let this lead slip. Can’t be long now, surely? Julie and Mads tried their luck from distance. Was another goal coming? And which team would get it!? India never stopped running. Shannon, who had had an amazing and decisive presence in the middle took a ball to the stomach and was down, winded. Tes dropped back to sit in with Ellen and Lia as the minutes ticked, but were they ticking fast enough? Another Mads effort. City player after City player weaving in and out through us, but never quite far enough before the strong challenge came from our back line. And then that whistle…Phew!! Girls, you were amazing today. So super proud. Make no mistake, you’ve just played an incredibly talented group, but you stood tall and deserved the points today! Well done!
