Coton U13 Girls vs PSG Black, Home (League)

As the curtains draw on the final foray of the season, the standings in the league all but decided and the Cup result was locked in.. but one battle still remained: the battle of the ‘Golden Boot’. By popular demand, the old management was wiped away and replaced with the youthful duo of Coach Emilia and Co-Coach Ellen, keen to try flex their arm at a hungry PSG Black side. Sporting an experimental formation, Coton got off to an unsettled start. Pauline, keen to show her hand, drew a pass from Shannon and put a curling left-footed speculator on target to test the PSG keep.

A thunderous kick out from Cha found Julie on the half way line. Julie’s half volley lay-off made use of India’s blistering speed, having her zeroing in on goal and panicking the PSG defense. PSG struck back through their indomitable No9, Amelia. Cha was up to the task as she made two tremendous saves as Amelia looked determined to carve us up. Moments later, driving down the right this time, PSG curled a ball into the danger zone. The ensuing melee saw PSG get the final touch on the ball and break the deadlock to go one ahead.

Cha, resolute, had a look about her that meant business. A belter of a spot kick down the middle, aided by a delicate flick-on from Katy, directed the ball to the feet of a hungry Seyma. Seyma, playing up front with India, seized the opportunity to play a quick ball down the channel. India found another gear, surging ahead and tucked the ball neatly behind the PSG Keep to level the match, much to the squeals of delight of her Coton teammates.

The match was raw, with both teams trying to find some sort of rhythm and some sort of edge. The first hint came again from the boot of India, who lofted a beautiful corner into the box and Pauline coming within a hairs-width of finishing. A carbon copy ball came 2 seconds later, and this time Pauline wasn’t going to be left wanting. Finishing with a top-drawer header, the PSG Keep stood no chance, and Coton went into the break 2-1 up.

A rousing pep talk by the young coaches saw a more traditional formation step back out for the second half. Midfield dominance started to come, as did some lovely football.

Pauline, with a taste of it now, met Julie’s corner with a volley that sailed just over the crossbar. Moments later, leaping through the air like a salmon from the back post, Pauline knocked in another header from another beautiful corner, à la India.

The next 10 minutes were tough to watch. PSG, via their determined No9, attacked again and again, scything through midfield and getting in behind our defense. Lia and Matilda shut the door again and again, as did Kate in midfield. Cha plucked any loose speculative shots or deflected threatening corners, but we certainly felt under the cosh.. Eventually the inevitable happened with PSG striking back with a definitive goal, closing the gap to one.

It wasn’t until some lovely interplay between Katy and Pauline in midfield, that we had some good go-forward ball. Shannon, head up, distributed the attack. Tesni, exploiting her natural fluency of the game, pushed when needed, and covered when threatened. Bam fired lovely balls up the line for Julie and Pauline to launch their forays. And Mads, relentless in her pursuit of the ball all day, turned her attention to the No9, neutralising her and fighting her corner on attack, whipping in danger ball after danger ball. Finally, the breakthrough came with Kate joining the header-brigade off Julie’s corner to all but seal the match. With just minutes left on the clock, the ball spilled free just outside the box. Julie, seeing her chance, struck low and hard, with the ball peeling in off the right upright, levelling the standings for ‘golden boot’. And just when we though it was all over, Kate had news for us, bolting up the middle, she tucked a professional finish into the left corner to bring the match to a close.

The final whistle signalled the end the match, the season, and the race for the golden boot. While perhaps not a classic Coton outing, the final match will be remembered for the stunning headers, the welcome return of Matilda who fit like a glove, Cha’s thumping kick outs, and India’s sailing crosses.

The season was jam packed with highs and lows.. it saw us rack up both our biggest win, and our largest defeat (as we attempted ‘football on ice’). Our Girls scored a cracking 91 goals, second only to City (108) and well clear of third placed Chesterton (55). Building on last year, 2023 saw 10 of our Girls on the score sheet, and saw two of our Girls third equal top goal scorers in the League. Testament to our amazing defense, we only conceded 27 goals all season.. this was in no small part thanks to Cha’s 6 clean sheets! What the numbers fail to capture is the quality of football played which at times was sublime. Well played Girls. Enjoy your well-deserved rest!

Players’ Player: Kate (Coton) and Amelia Fox (PSG)⚽️👍

Coton U13 Girls vs Chesterton Eagles, Away (League)

After a frenetic start to the season with games more frequent than Cambridge potholes, the tail end of this season has had games as rare as tuck-shop jelly snakes. With the league now out of our hands, and the Eagles hot on the heels of City, tonight was a must win for Chesterton to keep their title hopes alive.

We love playing the Eagles, always tight, always a battle. Tonight was no different with both teams clearly up for it. From the whistle, both teams started quickly. It was clear that midfield dominance was going to be one of the key deciders of the match, it was also clear that the surface was going to play a significant role. Mads and Ellen, recognising this early, claimed the ball and created space with a little give-and-go allowing Mads to fire an early shot to test the Eagles Keep. Moments later the Eagles were on the offensive, storming down the right. A robust contest from Bam sorted that out, with perhaps a little overly robust visit for seconds. The free kick, fended away by Shannon, was turned into an attacking opportunity down the right courtesy of Emilia and Indy. India, holding the ball up in midfield, played laterally to a rampaging Emilia. Emilia took the ball right up to the edge of the box and curled in a threatening cross. Julie and Pauline narrowly missed converting it as they bore down on goal. At the other end of the park, Chesterton fired in a well struck corner, right into our danger zone and right onto Aleks laces with a lovely half volley finish to put the Eagles 1-0 up at the break.

For the first 5 mins after the restart Coton pinned the Eagles deep in their own half. Probing runs from Mads and India, some nice centre play from Kate and Ellen, and some solid play from Shannon were sadly not enough to grab that all important equaliser. A surging run down the right, against the run of play, saw Chesterton curl a lovely ball in to go 2 ahead. Heads down, Coton started to lose structure, and, more importantly, started to lose the midfield, giving Chesterton space and time on the ball to pepper in three more shots on Cha. Cha, plucking balls from the air, and off the bobbly turf, was outstanding in goal. A safe pair of hands when we needed it most. Capitalising on the loss of structure, the Eagles struck the definitive blow and fired a third in.

Fired up and with the bit between their teeth, Coton came alive with only 15 on the clock. India had the measure of her counterpart again and again, finding herself taking on defender after defender. Katy rolled up her sleeves to battle down the right, and our defensive duo of Lia and Tesni sprang into action. The composure at the back and the desire to work the ball forward, despite the bobbly conditions, put enormous pressure on the Eagles. Coton had regained the midfield. Eventually the breakthrough came as Julie forced a defensive error and used her physicality to drive the ball through three defenders and slot it home. Invigorated, Coton willed the world to spin a little slower to allow more chances on goal. India broke free twice, launching two long belters at the Chesterton Keep. Kate and Shannon worked the midfield, both getting shots off, and at the other end Tesni was slamming shut every door the Eagles tried to open. Alas, it wasn’t to be. A well deserved victory for Chesterton, who did well to limit our options and get retribution for the first leg. Well played Girls….and thanks for the BeReal!! 😂

Final score: 3-1
