Coton U12 vs PSG Blacks, Coton Rec (League)

Our first Tuesday evening game this season was also our last match of the season. Fighting for bragging rights in the upper echelons of the league table, Coton hosted PSG Blacks at the Rec on the hottest eve of the year so far. PSG Blacks, buoyed by early seasons success, were out for that elusive Coton scalp, showing at the last encounter that little separates the teams on the score sheet as that match drew to a frustrating 0-0 draw. With contrasting styles of play, this was always going to be a great end-of-season highlight.

The promise of finishing on a high had the subs benches bursting at the seams.. or perhaps that was the promise of a Sam-sized bowl of chips (or four) at the Plough after! Immediately into the action, both teams dived into the game. PSGs direct, long ball approach put us under immediate pressure as our back three of Lia, Tes and Bam settled into the match to build our foundation. Ellen, holding in the midfield, took the first stint as ‘conductor’ distributing forward to engage Shannon or finding a through ball to Julie. This baton was passed to Mads and Emily with great effect as the match wore on. The culmination of countless hours of training were on display as Coton worked the ball confidently laterally and down the pitch. Pauline and Tes typified this in defense, working the ball up the right to beat the PSG attach and engage India, and the Mads/Ellen combo brought the same mentality to midfield, dominating the centre and engaging the wingers and Ami up front. Seyma was relentless in her pursuit of the ball, and Frosso battled down the wings. Cottoning onto the PSG long ball strategy from the kick out, Bam was superb in the air (as usual!), nullifying any attacking opportunities, and for the odd ball that made it through, Matilda and Emilia were there to tidy up and help Cha maintain yet another spectacular clean sheet, her 10th this season! With scores levelled and time running out it felt that it was only a matter of time before the constant barrage from Coton would pay dividends. A last-minute interchange between Julie and Katty gave a hint more width and go-forward in the mid to push the ball into the final third, pressuring the Keep and creating a single goal scoring opportunity for Katty to pounce on and finish with precision and characteristic Katty composure, sealing the win for Coton. A complete, whole-team performance, and a fitting end for a great season. Well done Girls, enjoy your well-deserved off-season (and chips!).

Coton U12 vs Netherton, Netherton FC (League)

For their penultimate league match of the season the Coton U12s braved epic journey times (all the way to Peterborough) and blistering sun (well, English summer sun anyway) to play Netherton FC away. Coton were strong from the off with Julie stealing the ball early and slotting it in the back of the net in the first few minutes. This gave Coton early confidence, however they had to hold off some retaliatory pressure from Netherton. Ellen worked hard to control the back three and was utterly reliable clearing the ball, Emilia had some brilliant runs chasing down her opposite player/s, and Tes’ well-timed tackles interrupted Netherton’s offensive flow like a metronome. Char made a couple of excellent saves under pressure to keep Netherton at bay. Meanwhile, further up, Frosso and India pushed forward on both sides of the pitch, winning several corners for Coton, only to be denied by some great saves by the Netherton goalie. Eventually, a corner from Julie was taken well by Shannon and volleyed straight into the net. 2-0 Coton.

In the even hotter second half Netherton continued to show fight to get back into the match, however Coton kept their composure and remained strong. A well-placed goal kick from Char came straight through to Julie up front and she efficiently drove the ball past the remaining defender and under the goalie’s arms for the third goal. Seyma, and then Katty, worked tirelessly on the right wing to keep the ball alive and Coton started to play some great passing football. Great decisions up and down the midfield by Lia, and backed up by Ellen and Pauline, meant that the Coton forwards could keep pressing. The result of this teamwork was two more goals, one slotted in by Shannon who hit the corner of the net, and a stunner from Julie (bringing up her hat trick!). For such a warm day, it was impressive that the intensity from both teams never really let up over the 60 minutes and although Netherton were a constant threat, Coton keep their heads and played their game for the win. Nice team effort girls.

Coton U12 vs Netherton, Coton Rec (League)

With only two teams and three matches left to play this season, the League title may be out of reach, but that in no way meant that Coton were going to drop their intensity and hunger. Gaining possession early on, Coton exploited the Keep as the extra player to work the ball up the pitch and into the final third time and time again, pressuring Netherton. The constant pressure paid off with Ellen and Katty winning a corner for their efforts. A keen strike by Mads into the danger zone had Netherton reeling as Seyma was first to the ball. Seizing the opportunity, Katty jumped on Seyma’s ricochet, to place a precise drive into the bottom left, drawing first blood. Their backs up, Netherton drove down the left and attacked the box in numbers. Shannon, making a guest appearance in goal, stopped the first shot, and dived at full stretch to whip the ball off some Netherton toes, saving a certain equaliser. Minutes later, a momentary lapse in midfield gave Netherton the advantage they needed. Surging forward, they exploited the numerical advantage to put their scoring machine Amna (No 9) into space to finish a quality strike in-off the left upright, squaring the match.

As the match wore on, and both teams’ desire to finish on top intensified, the game started to regress into popcorn football with hurried passes and uncontrolled first touches. Both teams pushed forward. For Coton this meant a dangerous vacuum in midfield and some intense pressure on the defense. Bam and Matilda worked as a duo up the left to stymie Netherton attacks and drive the ball forward, meanwhile on the right, Emilia drove time and time again down the line, battling with her opposite number to get a cross away. Seyma caused all sorts of problems for the defense with evasive running with the ball and pursuing the loose ball deep into the box to pressure the Keep, and Ellen made some storming length of the pitch runs to threaten the Netherton Keep. Alas, that extra goal on the scoresheet remained elusive as the match finished in a draw. Hats off to Netherton for the full 60 mins battle, and to our Girls for giving their all to the final whistle. Both teams will be counting the days until the rematch in a fortnight. Well played Girls.

Saturday 23rd April, 2022
Coton U12 vs PSG Black, Herbert’s Farm (League)

With little separating these teams when they clashed last year, and little separating them on the league table, today was always going to be a battle. Winning the toss, Ellen set her team off with the wind at their backs and the slope in their favour. Uncharacteristically of late, it took Coton a good 5 minutes to settle into the match and gain some composure on the ball. The bobbly surface, wind and slope added a complexity to the match for both teams, making playing passing football a real challenge.

Marshalled by Ellen, Coton attempted to tame the conditions by persisting with a passing mentality. Invoking Cha as the ‘extra player’ on a number of occasions, Ellen coordinated her defense to play around the PSG attack and build out from the back, producing some of the loveliest football we’ve seen this season. Mads executed her role precisely to win the ball in midfield, forcing PSG to look wide, where they were keenly met by Storm Emilia. Applying strategic pressure on the kick out, Coton forced a formation change to drop PSGs pivotal No 6 into the box to don kicking duties, limiting PSG options in midfield. Chances in the first half were in short supply, with two shots on target from Julie and a cut back (!) to find Madds, much to Coach Sam’s delight.

If the first half was slim pickings, the second was a drought as both teams doubled down in the battle for midfield dominance. A penalty just wide for Coton and a long range shot sailing over the crossbar from the PSG No 6 the only threats on either goal. PSG No 6’s throw, easily the best in the league, peppered our box, but Coton’s defense stood resolute. The final whistle brought down the curtain on the first nil-all draw in Coton’s recorded history, reflective of the arm wrestle between each team and with the elements. Well battled to both teams!

Final whistle: 0-0
Special Coaches mention: Cha (superb as the ‘extra player’ and with her impactful throw- and kick-outs) & Emilia (never say die attitude on attack and defense, desperate to convert the draw into a victory)โšฝ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘
