Coton U11 Girls vs PSG Black U11 Girls, Saffron Walden (Away)
League

Braced up to the hitches, Coton were perpared for the traditional Baltic winds that are synonymous with playing at an exposed Saffron Walden pitch, only to be caught off guard by some gorgeous spring sunshine. The first quarter started in the same vein, with a revved-up PSG side scything right down the centre of the pitch to not only strike first blood, but second as well, leaving our Girls a little shell shocked. Picking themselves up, our Girls played ball-to-feet and worked the ball forward time and time again. A beautiful passage saw a delicate 1-2 between India and Tesni, and Tesni claiming one back on the scoresheet for Coton, racking up her 4th of the season.

The second quarter welcomed Cha into central midfield with the express instruction to ‘close the door down the middle’..the tactic having immediate effect. Cha, indominable in midfield, repelled each PSG attack, turning the tide in favour of Coton. As PSG adapted to having to use the flanks, Coton pounced. Frosso and the twins worked in perfect harmony up front putting no less than 8 shots on goal, Emilia found her feet at right back, solid in defense and linking up with Bam to turn the ball intelligently into an attacking play rather than clearing the lines. As the match wore on, Coton continued their style of ‘heads up’, patient, passing football – working seamlessly as a team. Coach Andy’s gamble, playing his Joker card by switching India and Julie, paid off - India demonstrated exquisite skill drawing two defenders into the corner, ducking and diving towards the goal and used pin-point precision to effortlessly find the top right corner and level the match, much to the delight of the crowd. The quality of the goal was even applauded by the opposition Coaches.

As the match entered its final throes, the high work rate and full team effort began to pay dividends. A belter of a corner from Indy forced an own goal; a strong run down the right for Sophie, followed up by a spectacular cross found Julie on the penalty spot for a certain goal; and a well battled run from Emilia and a lay off to Soph found Emily in space to drive and score. The match sealed off, but what a spectacle of skill on display. Well played to both teams for such fantastic and complete performances.

It was a massive pleasure this evening to host Swavesey U16 Girls; a team, group of coaches and club that epitomises everything good about grassroots girls football in Cambridgeshire. We were made to work hard for a win against a well organised, hard working, talented group of girls who we’ve had the pleasure to play against and see develop over the last 6 years. A Tabs hat-trick ahead of a thunderous strike from Elsie on her left saw the girls through in the end, but the Swavesey girls put up a tough defence and we had to rely on some of our best football, sweeping moves, strength and pace to break them down. Very proud of our girls today, no subs and with some carrying injuries, yet one of our best team performances this season! 👍⚽️ ... See MoreSee Less

Coton U11 Girls vs Chesterton Eagles U11 Girls, Chesterton (Away)

Always a dangerous side, Chesterton welcomed our Girls to a sun-baked pitch, hoping for redemption after the teams last encounter, where our Coton Girls battled out a 1-0 victory in their first ever Cup match. After a slow opening few minutes, India took the initiative and drove down the right, winning a throw-in. Sophie’s throw in behind put Shannon in space. Ducking and diving, Shannon drew first blood with a delicately placed score in the bottom right to beat the Keep.

The hard ground nullified any home advantage Chesterton may have had, with the ball bobbling and bouncing high, this was clearly a game of exploiting half-chances, and playing controlled, percentage football. Both teams, unable to play their natural fast, passing game, initially succumb to the uncertainty of the terrain, clustering and crowding the ball. The injection of Cha, India and Bam into the game saw the pendulum shift towards Coton, lifting the work rate, and bringing some short range, controlled passing to generate space and opportunities to attack the Chesterton goal.

A dynamic defensive run by Sophie to harass the skilful Chesterton No 7, Alex, saw Sophie steal the ball, wrong foot Alex, and drive the length of the pitch to threaten the Chesterton Keep. Cha and Emily, buoyed by this, brought the structure (and go-forward) in the mid-field that Coton badly needed, firmly putting Chesterton on the back foot. As the match entered the final throes, the tempo trebled as a hungry Chesterton set their sights on squaring the match, winning an early corner and threatening Cha in goal. Cha’s kick out found Shannon driving forward who capitalised on the bounce. Shannon peeled off a pass to find Tesni, who used Indy to navigate through the Chesterton defence with a quick 1-2. With three Coton attackers storming the box, Indy was spoilt for choice and played the ball to Shannon’s dependable right foot, all but sealing the match. Lia, with her ranging defence, slammed the door firmly in the face of the final Chesterton flurries. Working seamlessly with Katerina, the Coton goal was impenetrable.

Of special mention, the Chesterton Keep, and the Coton trio (Cha, Shannon & Julie), left a huge imprint on the game (including a goal-saving lunge that Joe Wicks would be proud of), with both proactive and confident defence, but also giving strategic go-forward ball to their forwards. Well battled Girls!

Coton U11 Girls vs Haddenham Rovers U11 Girls, Coton Rec
League

A beautifully sunny Spring morning welcomed the Haddenham Rovers to Coton Rec for what promised to be a top-drawer game as both sides looked to further develop their expansive styles of football. The last time these two teams met was just prior to lockdown 3.0, with Haddenham hosting Coton and coming out on top that day. To add more spice to the occasion, the coaches moved the game to the bigger 9 v 9 pitch in preparation for next season. For many of the Girls this was their first outing on the larger pitch, and the increased numbers and space meant new combinations and new ways of playing.

A very even first half saw the Girls on both sides settle into the game. Haddenham, perhaps drawing on their Futsal experience, were calm with the ball under foot and strung together short, quick passes to work themselves out from deep in their own half. Using the width of the pitch well Haddenham strung together a flurry of attacking plays, only to be met by thumping tackles from Cha and Tesni, stemming the tide. Tenacious battling by Sophie won Coton an early corner and a first opportunity to test the Keep.

The second half time saw both teams grow into the game. A beautiful piece of quality play by the Haddenham right back saw her travel the length of the pitch, ducking and diving, and ultimately putting her striker in space for a speculative shot on goal. At the other end, Shannon pounced on a loose roll-out by the keep, only to be denied by the crossbar. As the tempo increased, so too did the cohesive attacking and defending. Bam, running her socks off, scorched down the line again and again to harrier the nippy No 13 out of the game. Winning the ball, Bam played Julie on allowing her to thunder down the left and unleash an early cross to find a rampaging Cha in full flight. Taking a leaf out of the Shannon-playbook, Julie sniped a kick out from the Haddenham Keep, switched it to her favoured left and sunk the ball into the bottom left to bring Coton up on the scoreboard and break the deadlock. An immediate and strong repost by the Haddenham No 3 down the guts saw her using her flanks and putting a bullet of a shot on goal, only to be denied by the crossbar. Two more incredible surges, and two equally amazing saves by Cha in goal signalled that the match was by no means over. Emelia, playing in only her second match for Coton was relentless in the midfield in both attach and defense, fearlessly taking on players twice her size. The standard of play from both teams was high, and an exciting prelude to the style of football that we’re all working towards for next season. Amongst the highlights were Ellen’s impenetrable defence, Lia’s clean sheet (again!), and Indy’s deft touches and control on the ball. Well battled all!

Coton U12 Girls vs Sawston U12 Girls, Coton
League

In their first hit out post-lockdown our U12 Girls welcomed a wily Sawston team to the Coton Rec. With such a long break between games both teams cautiously eased into the match, dusting off the pandemic cobwebs, regaining those first touches, and probing the opposition for weakness. An unfortunate ball-to-hand in the box gave Sawston the first opportunity of the match. Making herself large in the goal mouth, Nat got just enough on the ball to push it onto the crossbar and maintain her clean sheet. The second quarter brought an end to the deadlock as a shepherding run from Emma relieved the Sawston attack of the ball and gave Coton front foot ball. A pin point accurate cross from Bryony on the right found an advancing Julie who put her first touch to good effect, finding the bottom right corner and beating the Keep. Awoken, Sawston immediately struck back with a storming repost, only for Emma and Ellen to cut the attack dead in its tracks. Just minutes from half time a final surge from Sawston found them with numbers in the box and the Sawston attack thumped in a leveller to bring the scores even going into the break.

The emphasis for the second half was to build on the intensity of the first half, and also to test the Sawston Keep with a barrage of shots on goal. With Shannon in the midfield engine room, a well-directed lob cut out the Sawston midfielders and found Hettie in space. Wrong-footing her defender, Hettie drove forward centrally, drawing in the core Sawston defense. Hettie laid off a clever ball to find Anais for the shot. Sailing just to the left of the post, the shot signalled to Sawston that Coton was on the attack this half. Elliyah, commanding in midfield, used her long limbs and pace to great effect, disrupting and curtailing the Sawston attack, preventing them from establishing go-forward momentum on the ball. Ari, relentlessly driving the ball forward, was determined to break the deadlock. Working the ball up the pitch she found Shannon in space and used her to switch play to Julie on the left, winning a corner for Coton. Hettie, composed in defense, relieved the Sawston attack of the ball time and time again. Playing the ball flat to Ellen allowed a forward surge and a lay off to Julie on the left for a deft 1-2. Ellen then poked the ball into space for Shannon to step over, wrong foot her defender and break the deadlock with a lovely finish. The second match post-Lockdown 3.0 saw Coton travel to Cambourne to seek retribution for the last time these two accomplished teams met. The Girls focused on four key areas: to show bravery, to work cohesively as a team, to be relentless, and most importantly, to enjoy themselves. Working from a strong structure, and pressing high, the Girls put immediate pressure on Cambourne. Tesni played a lovely ball to Julie, putting her on the front foot to surge down the left flank. A deft 1-2 interchange with Shannon gave Julie the space and time she needed to whip the first shot on target and put Coton on the scoreboard. Moments later, another quality ball from Tesni found Emily on the left. Emily’s incisive pass found Shannon in the middle. Engulfed by defenders, Shannon laid off the ball to Indy, who beat two defenders down the right and put Shannon on the spot to bring up Coton’s second. A thumping strike from Julie and an ‘up the guts’ drive from Shannon brought up four and showed the threatening potential of the high press. Cambourne, determined, found the back of the net from a beautifully lofted shot to end the first half.

The second half saw more of the same, Coton holding space, taking time on the ball and playing intelligent passes. A standout feature was the way the entire team responded to the transition when losing the ball, getting back behind the ball and snuffing out Cambourne’s half chances. Shannon and Julie in goal had little if anything to do while Bam and Katerina shepherded away attacking forays, Emily and Sophie drove the ball up the wings and Cha, Indy and Tes threatened the Cambourne defenders. Emily wrong-footed an advancing defender to give Cha go-forward ball. Cha’s delicate touch put Julie in the perfect spot to find the back of the net and bring up her hat trick. A pin point corner from Indy found Shannon on the spot to bring up her fourth and to seal off a well fought team effort. Leaving nothing out on the pitch, and a complete performance behind them, the Girls retired to the side line with smiles all around. Well done Girls!

Coton U11 Girls vs Haverhill U11 Girls, Haverhill

With the end of Lockdown 3.0 almost in sight, the welcome restart of Saturday morning
football was a sight for sore eyes. A first up League match away from home gave our Girls the
chance to dust off some lockdown cobwebs, and, more importantly, to welcome two new
members to the squad, Frosso and Katarina.
The first quarter started with a fizz. Early pressure from Coton tested Haverhill within the first 2 minutes. Katarina’s first touch for Coton put Emily on the front foot, allowing her to thread
a cross to Shannon on the hop. A deft poke into space gave Julie just what she needed to put
Coton on the scoreboard. Having Haverhill on the back foot, Coton doubled down with goal’s
from Shannon and with Juliet bringing up her hat-trick. A super start, and certainly very little
evidence of cobwebs.
The second quarter started off as the first had finished, with Coton holding their structure,
playing the ball comfortably to feet and finding space. Frosso linked up with India and Sophie
to spin the Haverhill defence. Lia pulled out her telescopic throw, lobbing the Haverhill
defence and finding Sophie in space. Instinctively, Sophie sent the ball to the back of the net with her less favoured left boot. Crunching tackles by Amandine and Lia in defence kept the
ball well away from Matilda in goal.
During the pep talk at half time, Coach Ollie asked the Girls to build on the first half and to
continue to play for each other. The Girls responded, playing tall and on the front foot,
mucking in on defence and swarming forward on attack. Some stellar footwork from India
had her breeze past 3 defenders deep into her right corner and whip a cross into the box for
Cha to jump on the end of and send the ball to the back of the net. A spectacular throw-in
from Tesni found Julie in space. Julie whipped the ball across to Indy who had all the time in
the world to slot the ball passed the Keep from outside the box. Moments later Tesni was in
the mix again with a storming goal from just over half way! Classic Tesni! Not to be outdone,
Lia took matters into her own hands and drove the length of the field to put a belter on target.
The ball spilled free and Emily pounced to bring up the dozen for Coton. Two well-fought goals
from Haverhill were well deserved and equally well executed, closing out the match on a high.

Brilliant to see the teams back out playing football again after the long break. We've all missed it!

Coton U16 Girls looked a bit rusty in the first half against a resilient and hardworking Newmarket team, with a goalkeeper in outstanding form. Our girls made the breakthough in the second half and an assortment of goals and near misses meant we took all 3 points and moved to the top of the league for the first time this season.
