In their last match of the season

Our U12 Girls welcomed a hungry Milton team to a hard, sun-baked Rec. This match marks the end of a formative debut season for the U12 side, which has seen them go from newcomers to contenders under the watchful eyes of Coach Simon and Assistant Coach Clive.

Straight into the action, Maria jumped onto Shannon’s delicate pass through the channel to put an early shot on goal and test the Milton Keep, setting the scene for the match ahead. Clearly buoyant, Coton made a conscious effort to dominate the midfield and play on the front foot.

Like a Labrador sensing a free ham sandwich, Shannon pounced on a drop ball, threading the ball to Hettie. Dancing through the Milton defense, Hettie squeezed out a shot on goal. The deflection fell to an advancing Lilia who wasted no time in drawing first blood. Moments later, Coton, using the width, found an advancing Julie thundering down the touch line. Taking a first touch that in initially looked heavy, Julie rallied and belted the ball from far outside the box with her signature left boot to beat the Keep and bring up Coton’s second.

Tess linked up with Shannon to give her the inch of space she needed just outside the box, darting through with a piece of individual brilliance, Shannon picked up Coton’s third off a left-footed beauty. Relentless, a copy-book Shannon-Julie combo saw Shannon receive the ball from Hettie, draw in the defense and play a through-ball into space for Julie to run on to. A first-time bullet beat the Keep notching up Coton’s fourth, and putting Milton on the back foot. As the half dew to a close, Milton struck back with several flurries of attacks and three thumping shots on goal, only to meet the safe hands of Nat.

Coton, playing heads-up, positive football, with smiles on their faces, went into the second half with gusto. A superb drive from Lilia down the length of the pitch saw her with an option centrally. Exploiting the overlap to wrong-foot the defender, she precisely finished the play with an unsavable shot in the bottom left corner to beat the Keep. High in confidence, Coton put shots on through Anais and Tess; in the mid, Sergeant Major Ellen marshalled her troops and controlled play with perfect distribution, while Emma, like a banshee, scrambled back in defense and pushed forward into attack. Waves of Coton attack and scrambling Milton defense brough the match, and the season, to a close. A final match for Simon as Coach, but just the beginning for such a special new Coton team. As we launch into a Summer of Sport, Coton Rec, resplendent and bathed in sunshine, welcomed a budding Newmarket U11 Girls football team for a post-season friendly alongside Coton Cricket settling into their long season with a match against Milton. Newmarket, perhaps emulating NZ at Lords, came to seek retribution for past injustices (for Newmarket this was a tough defeat, for NZ this was the infamous ‘super over’ of 2019).

An immaculate pitch, with the straightest respect barrier Coton has seen in decades, contrasted against a tumultuous first quarter where both teams struggled to settle into the match and gain rhythm. Working a more traditional 3-3-2 formation this week (much to Shannon’s disgust) Coton struggled to put into practise the pass-and-go football we’ve been working towards, allowing Newmarket to encroach and bag a couple of tidy early goals.

A real test of character is how you respond to adversity. The second quarter saw the return of the Coton side we know and love: Shannon acting as the master puppeteer in midfield distributing the ball to her wings and forwards, India relentless in getting forward down the right and mucking back to help her defense, and Emilia lethal given 2 cm free space. An opportunistic pounce on the Keep’s kick-out from Julie saw Coton get onto the scoreboard, hammering the ball into the top left corner. Emily, scooping the ball from deep in her own half, scythed down the guts of the pitch to beat 4 Newmarket players. Perfectly balanced, Emily launched a thumper of a shot on goal from just over halfway. The spectacular Newmarket Keep struggled to contain the ball, spilling it just in front of an advancing Frosso. Delicately moving the ball to her right, Frosso wrong-footed the keep, and keenly placed the ball into the bottom right and squaring the match.

Standout performances in and out of goal from Frosso, Ellen ‘calm-as-custard’ in central defense, Tesni perfectly impersonating an impenetrable barrier in midfield, Bam alternating between attack and defense, and Katty looking like she had time for a cup of tea every time she touched the ball.

Emily edged Coton into the lead with an amazing driving run and finish. A substitution to bring an up-front trio of Indy, Shannon and Julie paid dividends. Shannon showed her exemplary perception of the game by adding another, intercepting the Keep’s throw out, and India sealed the match with a quality finish that typifies an ‘India goal’.

Special mention must go to Matilda.. for being Matilda (a defensive rock), and Emilia with her imitation of ‘Road Runner’ flying down the wings, Ellen as the defensive rock and Lia, confident, proactive, front foot, determined and happily triumphant.

Coton U11G vs Haddenham Rovers, Wilburton Rec (Away)

Haddenham welcomed our Girls to Wilburton for a post-season friendly on a scorching hot Sunday morning. Every time these teams come together it’s a sure-fire crowd pleaser, with oodles of sizzling-hot, passing football. The last two times these teams met only one goal separated them.

Trying out a new 2-3-3-1 formation we focused on creating space by exploiting triangles, using the sheer pace of Bam and Emilia down the flanks, and having the dynamic defensive duo of Ellen and Tesni protecting Cha in goal. Haddenham started with an intensity that caught our Girls off guard, with some lovely interchanges leading to an early score, putting Coton in the unfamiliar positions of being 1 down. Despite playing on the larger pitch, space was hard to come by with both teams jockeying effectively between attacking and defensive structures. A skilful break, and a clever piece of pass-and-go just before half time brought up Haddenham’s second.

Unflustered, our Girls started to find and exploit the triangles, stringing together passes and finding the channels. Emilia, tireless in both attack and defense, epitomised the unyielding Coton spirit. Frosso found another gear in the midfield, linking up with a rampaging Cha to create chances and harass Haddenham on the transition. A well timed ‘good luck dance’ from Cha at the start of the final quarter meant the ‘Crossbar Gods’ once again came to our aid and held out a thumper of a shot from Haddenham. A quick kick out from Cha found Frosso on the halfway line. Hemmed in by the Haddenham midfield, she managed to thread the gap and find Julie in space. Julie poked the ball forward to find Emilia storming down the right wing. A well worked cross found Indy just outside the box. Taking a few touches to wrong-foot the defence, Indy slipped one past the keeper to close the gap. With just seconds on the clock Frosso won a free kick for Coton. Julie stepped up and curled the ball into the bottom right to square the match and bring it to a close. As billed, Coton’s first ever U11 draw result was a tight arm wrestle and a fantastic spectacle. Well played Girls.

Coton U11G vs Peterborough Northern Star, Peterborough (Away)

Making our first venture north to Peterborough, our Girls took on the newly formed Northern Star, on what was to be a match that evolved as the day went on. Beginning on the smaller 7 vs 7 pitch both teams struggled to get go forward momentum, almost playing a suffocated style of football. Katty seized the opportunity to break the deadlock, beating the Keep on the left, and bringing up her first goal for Coton. Fantastic result Katarina! The Coaches jumped at the opportunity to move the second half to the larger 9 vs 9 pitch. Both teams took to the increased space like ducks to water, with more fervour around the ball and more structure to their play. Northern Star, despite this being their first experience of 9 vs 9 wasted no time in squaring the match, much to the delight of the burgeoning home supporters, the largest crowd by far that our Girls have played in front of. Some linking play, beginning from the back with some deft 1-2’s between Bam and Ellen, and worked up the field by Sophie and Katty, led to two reposts from Cha to push the match out of Northern Star’s reach. As the match dew to a close, by popular demand we moved to a 11 vs 11 format, a first for both teams. Sporting a version of 4-4-2 we really started to zing. Working the ball up from the back, playing back when it was on, making triangles, and getting first to the ball. Lia calm and composed on the ball beckoned time and time again to Julie in goal for a roll ball, putting it up the line for Indy to hit with pace or more centrally for Shanno to control and distribute. Working it wide, Sophie pounced on the opportunity to find the back of the net. Moments later Shannon took to a loose bouncing ball in the box and found the back of the net to bring the game to an end. In a day that had everything, from frustration to elation, it was clear that we’ve outgrown the 7 vs 7 pitch and that we’re developing the skills to exploit the increased space that 9 vs 9 brings. It was a really enjoyable game, played in a very relaxed manner. The girls were really polite to each other and played some really good football. We took alot away from this friendly to work on over the next few weeks.

And so it begins, the post-season transition from 7 vs 7 to the larger, more expansive game of 9 vs 9. Larger pitches, increased ground to cover, enormous goals (!) and a new way of playing for most of the players. Where in the past an end-to-end piece of magic was possible, now, in the larger game, teamwork, combinations and strategy are the key to successfully working the ball up the pitch.

Both teams began the match with a buzz, working the ball forward and getting early shots off. Cha, dominant as always in goal, put her midfield on the front foot with a thunderous clearance. Central mids, Shannon and Frosso, worked feverishly to bring the ball under control and drew first blood with Shannon popping a delicately placed shot passed the PSG Keep. In the mix again moments later, Shannon showed her quality, putting in a lovely back heel to Julie, reclaiming it and skilfully drawing the ball back to slot her second. A rampaging drive from India saw her wrong foot the defender and belt one passed the keeper, then seconds later put Julie in for a scorcher from her left boot. Claiming one back, the omnipresent Ellie darted through our defense, zigging and zagging in an unstoppable run.

The second half picked up where the first left off with the Girls attacking the ball, playing it to feet, and working it up the pitch. Much to the Coaches delight Bam, Katty, Lia and Emilia worked the ball out of their own defensive corners up the pitch rather than clearing it out, turning defense into attack – something that will become very important next season. Cha, catching PSG napping, ‘yeeted’ [word included for Shannon’s sake] a perfectly weighted throw to put Frosso on the front foot. Frosso stormed the goal, beating the centre back and the Keep with a delicate top-drawer finish. A very stylish first goal for Coton from Frosso! A spectacular cross from Julie with Indy and Shannon hitting the box at pace, and a turn of pace and 50 m drive from India finished the match. A super performance with too many moments to pull out, intense energy from Emilia, Bam and Frosso, poise on the ball from Katty and Shannon, incisive drives from Indy and Julie, threatening runs from Ami, rock solid marshalling at the back from Ellen and Lia and strength in and out of the goal from Cha. Coton U11 Girls vs Cambridge City U11 Girls, Pembroke Sports Ground (Home)

With Saturday billed as a meteorological washout, the same couldn’t have been further from the truth at pitch level as Coton U11 Girls took on Cambridge City in the final League match of the season. City is the team that is both revered and feared across the league, and a key fixture on every team’s calendar. The last time these two clashed was a frenetic friendly, just as Lockdown 2.0 loomed, with Coton coming out on top in the dying minutes after an epic masterclass battle. Such was the occasion that Coach Sam ‘worked his magic’ to move the match to the perfectly manicured pitch at Pembroke College.

The match began at a feverish pace, with a speculative shot from Poppy scooped up by Cha’s safe hands. Emily, playing from left back, hoisted the ball over the City attack and put Julie in space to surge down the line and strike first blood from just over halfway. Despite the score line, City had the best of the first half, building from the back, and stringing together a series of assaults to probe the Coton defence. Tesni and Cha marshalled the defensive lines, while Ellen and Emily turned each City attack into an opportunity for Coton.

Emilia and Katarina (Katty) proved to be a dynamic duo down the right, harassing the City advances, and threatening with relentless attacks. Lia, not to be left out of this, unleashed her telescopic throws to work Emilia into space, creating opportunity after opportunity. A scything City run down the middle split Coton in two and put Zizi on the penalty spot for a snap shot that sailed just over the crossbar, demonstrating just how lethal City can be. Indy, taking a leaf out of last week’s performance, jumped on a City roll-out to put a shot on, narrowly missing bringing up Coton’s second. Moments later, Tesni robbed a rampaging City attack and found Julie. Dispossessed by the City centre half, Indy retaliated, regaining the ball and slotting the ball into the top right corner, beating the City keep at full stretch. City, by no means deterred, peppered the Coton goal, only to be denied by some stellar keeping by Cha. In the dying minutes Katty pounced on a loose ball, lofted it into the City box for Shannon to get a delicate first touch on and slot the goal and seal off the match.. and the season.

As the ‘3 cheers’ and elation wore off, the realisation of an unbeaten season settled in. In a season of lockdowns and bubbles, Coton had managed to soldier forward and secure not only an unbeaten 11-0 (Win-Loss) league result, but also a win in their first ever Cup game, rack up 6 clean sheets, amass a whopping 60 goals, while only conceding 10. Notably, Coton welcomed three new team members into the fold (Katty, Emilia and Frosso), who all contributed in amazing ways throughout the year. The vision at the beginning of the season had been to consolidate each Girl’s core skill set, to build a ‘team’ approach to playing, and to bring an understanding of attacking and defensive structures to the game in an effort to build a well-rounded team. This broadening out of the team could be seen in both the 6 clean sheets, but also in the 8 different goal scorers, setting the scene beautifully for the step-up to 9 v 9 next year. Coton U11 Girls vs Cambridge City U11 Girls, Pembroke Sports Ground (Home)

With Saturday billed as a meteorological washout, the same couldn’t have been further from the truth at pitch level as Coton U11 Girls took on Cambridge City in the final League match of the season. City is the team that is both revered and feared across the league, and a key fixture on every team’s calendar. The last time these two clashed was a frenetic friendly, just as Lockdown 2.0 loomed, with Coton coming out on top in the dying minutes after an epic masterclass battle. Such was the occasion that Coach Sam ‘worked his magic’ to move the match to the perfectly manicured pitch at Pembroke College.
The match began at a feverish pace, with a speculative shot from Poppy scooped up by Cha’s safe hands. Emily, playing from left back, hoisted the ball over the City attack and put Julie in space to surge down the line and strike first blood from just over halfway. Despite the score line, City had the best of the first half, building from the back, and stringing together a series of assaults to probe the Coton defence. Tesni and Cha marshalled the defensive lines, while Ellen and Emily turned each City attack into an opportunity for Coton.
Emilia and Katarina (Katty) proved to be a dynamic duo down the right, harassing the City advances, and threatening with relentless attacks. Lia, not to be left out of this, unleashed her telescopic throws to work Emilia into space, creating opportunity after opportunity. A scything City run down the middle split Coton in two and put Zizi on the penalty spot for a snap shot that sailed just over the crossbar, demonstrating just how lethal City can be. Indy, taking a leaf out of last week’s performance, jumped on a City roll-out to put a shot on, narrowly missing bringing up Coton’s second. Moments later, Tesni robbed a rampaging City attack and found Julie. Dispossessed by the City centre half, Indy retaliated, regaining the ball and slotting the ball into the top right corner, beating the City keep at full stretch. City, by no means deterred, peppered the Coton goal, only to be denied by some stellar keeping by Cha. In the dying minutes Katty pounced on a loose ball, lofted it into the City box for Shannon to get a delicate first touch on and slot the goal and seal off the match.. and the season.
