Tuck shop open, respect barriers aligned, it was back to ‘business as usual,’ but with a twist. Never before has a season been so anticipated as the 21/22 Season (at least from the coaches perspective). Emerging from Pandemic paralysis into our first competitive season the spectators were presented with a new style of play, a new shape to the game, new rules and a new team captain.

The last time St Ives and Coton clashed was in the U8’s some 3 years ago.. on that day the keeper was the standout, facing down a relentless barrage from Matilda, India and Shannon. Today, was no different. Both teams started tentatively, feeling out the opposition. St Ives initial efforts to press were met with resilient Coton defense. Marshalled by the new Captain Fantastic, Ellen, the defensive structure found triangles to take possession of the ball and to work it up the pitch, ball to feet. Soon, go-forward ball was presented to Shannon, who threaded the central defenders legs with an immaculate pass to put Emily in for a 1 v 1 with the keep. A determined and tussling Emily struck first blood. Seconds later Bam was into the mix, linking with Shannon in the mid to put Emily on for a second shot on target. With players working hard to find space, Shannon played the role of the conductor to perfection, working with Emilia and India down the right, and Bam and Julie down the left, Shannon orchestrated Coton to a respectable 3-0 lead.

A superb give and go, and drive down the right gave St Ives the space to put on goal an immaculate, curving strike that snuck into the top right corner, shortening the score. Matilda, Katy and Frosso linked up to threaten the St Ives keep. Frosso, relentless, driving down the left, beat her opponent in the corner to lay in a cross for an advancing Katy and Ami. Cha, released from goal became St Ives worst nightmare, threatening and battling she notched up Coton’s fourth, before Emily followed suit and scythed up the middle to double her tally. A fine finish from Shannon moments later brought up her hat-trick and topped off Coton’s first competitive victory. Kudos goes to both team for a fantastic first battle of the season.

Congratulations to Coton U12 Girls, winners of the brilliantly organised Cambourne Town Tournament this afternoon! Immense performances throughout the team with cracking Charlotte between the sticks and a calm and collected captain’s display by exemplary Ellen, marshalling the effervescent Emilia and tenacious Tesni either side of her. Brilliant Bam and fantastic Frosso added to our team’s attacking prowess, with incredible India, magnificent Madeleine, super Shannon and jesting Juliet tearing through the opposition defences. Safely navigating passage out of the group stage against two strong PSG sides and Cambourne themselves, the girls had a tense semi against PSG Black who were growing into the tournament after beating us earlier on. Both teams were fantastic and, with nothing between them, extra time and penalties followed. Massive well done to all the girls who stepped up and took their penalties but the plaudits go to GK Charlotte who’s incredible saves, including a full stretch finger tip round the post, took our girls into the final. Here we met PSG Blue, a team brimming with talent and pace, and another tense game ensued. After good work out wide by Indi, Mads made a darting run from right to left across the edge of the box and took the PSG defence and keeper by surprise bending a left foot shot low into the corner of the net. PSG came back at us and we spent most of the rest of the game camped out in our box, defending cross after cross, teasing run after run. Finally, a ball out to Julie who somehow found that last bit of energy for a dynamic run down the left wing and bullet cross into the box for the late run of Indi to collect and fire past the PSG keeper to eruptions of celebrations on our bench who knew the game had been won. A fantastic day celebrating a terrific season for the U11 girls! A good old fashioned Girls vs Parents game also enjoyed by all.

The weather forecast had been mixed but it turned out to be a minor scorcher of an afternoon at Herbert’s Farm in Saffron Walden where our girls have played so many games over the past couple of years. They were playing PSG’s newer team who had given us a very tough battle last time out in a game where Frosso announced herself as a key member of the team. Today proved to be another very hard fought win which Coton played without Manager Al who is in New Zealand and with only one substitute. We would have had no subs but Annie who plays up a year for the under 12s kindly stepped in late in the day.

The afternoon didn't start well as coach Olly had forgotten his tactics board and resorted to using footballs to show the team the formation and tactics we wanted to employ. There was a lot of new information to take on board but the girls showed in the way that they tried to play that they had been carefully listening. Some of the passing combinations and movement were fantastic and if the girls continue on their current trajectory there is going to be some special football played next season. At times the girls looked a bit unsure of their roles and got too bunched together and were hesitant in what they were trying to do but in other moments they drew in a dogged PSG team with neat passing moves before switching the play to the open side using the defensive midfielder as pivot. Shannon and Tes played this role brilliantly, showing great awareness of their options and moving the ball quickly and efficiently.

There was a real contrast in style between the two teams with Coton looking to impose their possession based game against a PSG team who looked to play the ball early and long and catch us on the counter attack. The problem for PSG was that the Coton defence was well organised, quick and determined. Tes stood out quietly as always, reading the game, intercepting passes, breaking up play and winning all of her one on one battles. Emelia and Sophie at full back were always on the front foot and looking to present an attacking threat but they were cool and calm and happy to play the ball back if there were no forward options and whenever they were caught out of possession they showed the determination to get back and cut off any danger. Between the three of them, Tes, Sophie and Emelia blunted and frustrated a quick and strong PSG front line. In possession we always posed a threat with India and Julie always willing to chase lost causes and make dangerous incisive runs while Emily, Annie and Amandine worked tirelessly to close down defenders when out of possession and to break into the box to try and get on the end of crosses when in possession.

Coton went ahead late in the first quarter with Shannon shooting calmly from just outside the box after being set up by some lovely combination play down the right. After that Coton had a long period where they dominated possession and territory with PSG sitting back and defending in numbers meaning that chances were few and far between. Coton looked to attack and increase their lead but being limited to a few half chances for Julie, India and Emily while PSG looked to catch us on the counter attack. Then early in the third quarter and against the run of play one of PSG’s breaks came good and a slick pass freed the ever dangerous PSG winger who ran through on goal and calmly slotted the equaliser. This changed the dynamic of the game for a while and with PSG galvanised, confidence raised and the home support pushing them to score again, most of the balance of the third quarter was played in the Coton half. Coton, however, showed their typical resilience to deny PSG any further clear cut chances and at the end of the quarter they started to regain a foothold and control. Cha was instrumental in winning the ball back and driving the team forward when some of her team mates seemed to be tiring. Then, with the game becoming stretched, Coton exploited the extra space; moving the ball quickly down the left before switching the ball to Emily on the right who burst between the centre back and right back and rolled the ball across the keeper into the corner of the net to restore Coton’s lead. This was a crucial goal with the game having been on a knifepoint for a while.

In the last quarter Coton dominated and pressed home their advantage. India showed some lovely wing play to get to the by-line, cut back past the defender before picking Emily out with a perfect pass that she duly smashed into the net. Shannon rounded off the scoring with a speculative shot from distance that squirmed under the keeper.

All in all another solid display from the girls who, even when not playing at their best, are resilient and hard to break down and always offer a range of attacking threats. Coton U12 Girls vs Milton U12 Girls, Coton

In their last match of the season

Our U12 Girls welcomed a hungry Milton team to a hard, sun-baked Rec. This match marks the end of a formative debut season for the U12 side, which has seen them go from newcomers to contenders under the watchful eyes of Coach Simon and Assistant Coach Clive.

Straight into the action, Maria jumped onto Shannon’s delicate pass through the channel to put an early shot on goal and test the Milton Keep, setting the scene for the match ahead. Clearly buoyant, Coton made a conscious effort to dominate the midfield and play on the front foot.

Like a Labrador sensing a free ham sandwich, Shannon pounced on a drop ball, threading the ball to Hettie. Dancing through the Milton defense, Hettie squeezed out a shot on goal. The deflection fell to an advancing Lilia who wasted no time in drawing first blood. Moments later, Coton, using the width, found an advancing Julie thundering down the touch line. Taking a first touch that in initially looked heavy, Julie rallied and belted the ball from far outside the box with her signature left boot to beat the Keep and bring up Coton’s second.

Tess linked up with Shannon to give her the inch of space she needed just outside the box, darting through with a piece of individual brilliance, Shannon picked up Coton’s third off a left-footed beauty. Relentless, a copy-book Shannon-Julie combo saw Shannon receive the ball from Hettie, draw in the defense and play a through-ball into space for Julie to run on to. A first-time bullet beat the Keep notching up Coton’s fourth, and putting Milton on the back foot. As the half dew to a close, Milton struck back with several flurries of attacks and three thumping shots on goal, only to meet the safe hands of Nat.

Coton, playing heads-up, positive football, with smiles on their faces, went into the second half with gusto. A superb drive from Lilia down the length of the pitch saw her with an option centrally. Exploiting the overlap to wrong-foot the defender, she precisely finished the play with an unsavable shot in the bottom left corner to beat the Keep. High in confidence, Coton put shots on through Anais and Tess; in the mid, Sergeant Major Ellen marshalled her troops and controlled play with perfect distribution, while Emma, like a banshee, scrambled back in defense and pushed forward into attack. Waves of Coton attack and scrambling Milton defense brough the match, and the season, to a close. A final match for Simon as Coach, but just the beginning for such a special new Coton team.
