A lovely sunny evening on the Rec for Coton U15 Girls to welcome Huntingdon who were on a good run, having won 4 of their last 5 games. We had a full squad of 16 who were all relaxed mood in the warm-up and looking forward to playing again after a 10-day gap. Coach Sam rang the changes throughout the match to make sure that everyone got good game time and it is credit to the girls that the style of play and the standards didn’t waiver.

Huntingdon are a good team with some exceptional players but it is hard to play without the ball and we kept it well tonight. Our girls nearly took a very early lead with a free kick just over the bar from the edge of the box. Lexie, playing against many of her schoolmates, was a menace all night and went close to opening the scoring on a couple of occasions, having been played in after some lovely interchanges by Kate, Ilazki and Shannon who were controlling the midfield. It wasn’t one way traffic, however, and Huntingdon broke several times with skill and pace and the back four of Bam, Annie, AJ and Lia needed to be strong and alert to keep them at bay. Alice and later Grace pinned the Huntingdon defence back with their hard running and pace while Mads and Emilia were working tirelessly down the wings supported by neat and tidy play by Bam and Lia. It was the Emilia bursting through on the right with her electric pace to slot cooly under the keeper who opened the scoring. From there the goals came at a steady pace. Kate finished off a beautiful team move by cooly passing the ball into the corner of the net with her left foot from 10 yards out having made herself a yard of space with a deft feint. Mads next with a powerful shot coming in off the left. Next an India corner from the right nestled in the back of the net. She is claiming it but maybe one for the dubious goals committee. Ilazki may have got a touch on it and if she did it would have been fitting reward from and excellent all round midfield display - battling for possession when we didn’t have the ball and showing her lovely range of passing when we did. Lexie next with a clever left foot finish after another sweeping move before AJ nodded in another pinpoint Indie corner for a 6th goal just before the half time whistle.

Always looking to raise the standards, Coach Darren asked the girls at half time if they could look after the ball even better than they did and if they could look to switch play ore to open up the space rather than going back into traffic. The second half produced more excellent football which often started from incisive accurate passing from back via Tes, AJ, Lia and Annie. Shannon, Mads and Pauline kept the play flowing through the middle and Emilia now playing on the left was unstoppable scoring 3 more cracking goals in a devastating 10-minute spell of attacking football with Alice, Shannon and Lexie at the forefront. Bam saw a free kick from the edge of the box tipped onto the bar. Pauline was denied a special goal by a brilliant save after jinking her way through the Huntingdon defence. Mads crashed in a lovely volley into the far corner after the ball fell up nicely for her on the edge of the box. India curled in a right foot shot from just inside the box, despite the Huntingdon keeper nearly pulling off another brilliant save. Lexie jinked and powered her way past 3 Huntingdon players on the right and blasted in to finish off proceedings. In between the incessant wave of Coton attack, Huntingdon produced some good football and had 3 or 4 chances to grab a consolation goal but were denied by an outstanding reaction save from the ever-dependable Cha and some determined last ditch defending by AJ, Grace and Lia. All in all, another great display from the girls and another precious 3 points which takes them to top spot in the league for the first time all season. A tough night for Huntingdon who aren’t used to being heavily beaten but there was much to admire about how they played and, on another evening, the scoreline could have been much closer.

Two more huge games to go – first up Cambridge City at the Rec on Saturday then the visit of Newmarket on 17th May. What an exciting end to another fantastic season 👍⚽️

Back to football at Coton Rec this weekend for Coton U15 Girls, at the start of a run of five fixtures in the space of three weeks that will decide where the title goes this season. Opponents today were Cambourne, ever improving and always a tough fixture in the calendar.

A good prematch warmup for the girls and out we went, full of enthusiasm to be playing again after the Easter break. We were confident to have the lions’ share of possession in this game, but knew the threat Cambourne have up front, combined with a well-organised defence meant taking our chances would be key. It took us a while to get our passes going and early sloppiness that has dogged so many of our performances this season was on show again. Never for want of trying, but final passes executed poorly, or first touches bouncing up making the second get away. Not for Kate though who put on a masterclass today from start to finish at the centre of midfield, alongside ever dependable Mads who tackled hard, and was always an option for both defence and attack to play into. Quality from both. Lexie on the right was growing into the game, pace to burn down the wing and causing many problems for the Cambourne left back. Indie the same on the left but tightly guarded by their quick right back. Alice had a battle on against a strong centre half with Shannon buzzing around in the hole behind. Across the back line, Tes on the right, AJ and Emilia central and Bam in her usual position on the left, always available to start our buildup. We were creating chances but shots were soft or from distance, and besides, Cambourne seemed to have signed Mary Earps, as we watched the most accomplished goalkeeping display today from an opposition that we can remember. As our threat grew, so did the awesomeness of the Cambourne keeper, plucking balls from the air, coming out early to through balls, and diving when needed. Suffice to say, she already deserved player of the match by halftime. It was clear something very special was going to be needed to beat her, and so that’s what Shannon delivered!…Now I know I won’t do this goal justice trying to explain it, but I’ll have a go because we think it may be the best team goal we’ve ever scored and the final cross and finish were applauded by both benches and both sets of spectators. Working the ball neatly with 1 touch, 2 touch across our backline, AJ to Emilia, Emilia to Bam. Up to Indie and back in to Mads. Close control and skill needed in the middle with Cambourne chasing us down, the ball worked across to Kate to thread one of her pinpoint passes into the run of Lexie out wide on the right. We’d seen her test the defender with pace, but this time, slowing it down, back to Tes, Kate and then Lexie again to whip a cross from so far out into the danger area on the edge of the six yard box to perfectly meet the late run of Shannon from deep who cushioned her header past the retreating and diving Cambourne keeper. Honestly, proper quality from the girls. One of those moments that makes you so proud of them all. Not long after, Shannon thought she’d grabbed another, but after bursting through and finishing neatly into the far post, the offside flag was raised. Ikazki, Annie, Lia and Amelie on now. Big crunching tackles from Lia and both Annie and Ilazki making sure those big kicks from their keeper didn’t get a chance to bounce. Amelie dancing down the left, working well with Mads and Alice, and bursting through herself but denied a goal by another good save. Cambourne saw the half out and would be pleased to have kept the scoreline to just the single goal.

The second half was a repeat of the first in so much as the Cambourne defence just would not let us in. Charlotte had had a quite game, doing the simple stuff neatly, coming out quickly to collect the through balls before they became chances, working with the defence to play across when needed and firing those thunderous but pinpoint kicks out to get us going forward. We’d had a succession of corners in the first half that had all been collected brilliantly by the Cambourne keeper. Kate had been tasked with trying to get close to her for corners in this second half. Lots of pushing and position changes back and forth, between Keeper, Defender and Kate, as Indie lined one up. Fired in by Indie and the keeper burst round Kate to try to get to the ball first, but the flight was high and she misjudged only able to punch into her own net. Felt a little bit guilty having asked Kate to do that, particularly given what a brilliant performance their Keeper had put in, but on the other hand, it’s all part of the game! With a two-goal lead the game was much more confortable. Emilia had a runout at no 10, Lia thundered a shot that was sneaking in at the near post and had to be palmed away for the corner. Tes stepped out and combined with Kate and Lexie. Alice was a constant threat. Ikazki, Mads, Amelie and Shannon took turns in the middle and closed the game out. But in the end, no more goals. Just those important three points from a banana-skin fixture.

Credit to Cambourne for how far they’ve come in a short space of time. We were reminded this fixture last season finished 12-1, so a massive difference, and we were made to work very hard today for the victory. Every player on the pitch will be proud of how they played today, and we know there will be more of these tight games in the future. Well done girls 👍⚽️

This weekend saw Coton U16 Girls play their final (ever!) game at Coton Rec. A great performance by the girls who marked the occasion with a clean sheet and 3 goals to defeat a strong Netherton side. One more game left for the girls and that will be the season finished. It has been a pleasure and privilege to have these coaches, parents and especially the players part of our club. A fantastic group of girls who we have no doubt will go on to many great things in their lives ahead. But we know in whatever that may be, college, uni and beyond, you’ll always have football with you now and the memories you’ve created together. Best of luck for your final away game and for the future! 👍⚽️ ... See MoreSee Less

Coton U15 Girls welcomed Deeping United for the reverse fixture of last week’s close battle. Respect to Deeping who made the long journey despite only having 11 players. A beautiful morning on the Rec with the sun shining on the freshly cut pitch and a good buzz around the girls in the warm-up, they looked focussed and up for it, and that proved to be the case.

We started brightly, moving the ball well and creating several chances with Grace unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions having used her pace to get into some great positions, and Mads hitting the bar with a powerful strike from distance. But then the inevitable happened as Deeping won a corner with their first real foray into the Coton half. A great delivery ended with the ball being bundled in at the back post. Just like last week, however, we didn’t have to wait long for the equaliser, Mad scoring direct from a freekick with a clean hit from 20 yards. 2 minutes later we took the lead when a clever cut back from Mads on the right side of the goal line was met with a sweet hit from Lexie from the edge of the box into the left-hand corner of the goal. There was enough time left in the half for Lexie to hit an unbelievable thunderbolt which cannoned off the bar before the half ended.

The second half was the most dominant half we’ve played this season with every player contributing. The defence was rock solid as well as being composed. On a number of occasions the ball was worked from AJ or Emilia back to the composed Cha who calmly played the ball to Tes, Bam or Annie to work the ball through the thirds and up the pitch. Pauline, Kate and Mads were purring in the midfield, with Alice and Amelie working hard and causing lots of issues down the wings. It wasn’t long before Mads played a lovely ball to release Amelie who drove down the wing and across into the box, with pace and skill to fire under the keeper. Now Coton were rampant and the Deeping goal was under siege. Pauline capped another superb all-round display with a mazy run that ended with her stroking the ball home. India scored direct from a corner for the second week in a row before Mads hit another banger from distance to cap another top quality captain’s performance. A lovely moment next when Grace scored her first goal for the team as she burst through the centre of the Deeping defence and passed the ball into the corner of the net. Goal of the game next with India dodging and feinting her way past 4 defenders before clipping the ball past the keeper for a wonderful solo effort. Mads had time for one more after Bam refused to give up a ball that looked to be going out after she had battled her way down the field the checked back and picked out a great pass. Emilia, who had played most of the last two games in defence, had been moved to striker for the last half an hour of the game and could have had a hat-trick in that time with her clever movement and speed. She got the goal that she deserved close to the final whistle, slamming the ball home from near the penalty spot.

It was a tough morning for Deeping, but what a great group of girls and coaches, despite the scoreline, heads never dropped and they never stopped battling. Credit to Coton though, all the girls working hard and shifting the ball around with fantastic skill. A pleasure to watch! 👍⚽️

A long trip to the Baston Brudenell Playing Fields north of Peterborough for Coton U15 Girls, and our first ever fixture against mid-table Deeping. Deeping have been competitive in every match they have played in their first season in the Cambs League and we knew that this was going to be a tough assignment. We were pleased that Lia, still nursing her injury, had made the trip today too, to offer positive support, sweets and chocolates, and to keep Coach Olly in line 💪

The first 10 minutes were cagey with the teams sizing each other up but the pattern of the game was emerging. Coton looked to patiently pass the ball short through the midfield and pick out the runs of Lexie on the right, India on the left and Shannon central while Deeping, playing with a back 3, looked to get the ball forward quickly and use their numeric superiority in the midfield to win the second balls and get into dangerous areas around the Coton area. Coton seemed to be getting control of the game when Deeping struck; a defensive slip let them in for an easy goal. Not for the first time this season, Coton hit back immediately with a great move, an interchange of passes in the midfield found Kate with the time to play a slide rule pass for the electric Lexie to burst onto and calmly slot the ball in the corner.

Coton continued to enjoy most of the territory and possession, forcing saves and winning corners, but Deeping always carried a real threat. Whenever their Keeper got the ball to hand, she looked to launch one of her booming kicks, before we had time to drop back into position, and release one of their quick and powerful forwards. Too many times, the ball was allowed to bounce making it a tough morning’s work for the Coton defence. AJ and Annie were their combative-selves and Emilia and Bam were solid in the fullback positions. Pauline, Mads and Kate were starting to get a grip of the midfield winning a lot of the first and second balls and using that possession well. Picking it up on the halfway line, Pauline played an unbelievable ball, curling perfectly into Lexie’s path and she calmly rolled it under the keeper for her 2nd goal. We continued to push for goals - Kate went very close on a couple of occasions including a curling strike which crashed back off the inside of the post and rolled across the line before being cleared. Ilazki on now in midfield and Tes in defence and both were playing very tidily. And Grace on up front for what turned out to be a fantastic Coton debut. Welcome Grace! Pressure told and after a bit of ping pong in the Deeping area, the ball breaking to India who fired the ball into the corner 3:1 and with half-time approaching it felt like this might turn out to be a comfortable afternoon. Then within 2 minutes Deeping were level. A couple of sloppy passes gave Deeping two chances to pump the ball forward and release their powerful, speedy striker who, twice, made no mistake with the finishes, and meaning we headed in at the break honours even.

Everyone was bit nonplussed at half-time but there was no sense of panic as it had been a good first half-performance with so much right about it, we just needed to cut our silly mistakes and be aware of the Deeping threat. The second half was played in much the same vein as the first but with an adjusted back line doing a great job of keeping their forwards at bay; Tes out on the right now, and the raw pace of Emilia alongside AJ to nullify the Deeping threat. One time they did get through, Cha bravely came charging off her line, but slipping and colliding nastily with the Deeping winger which led to her coming off. Replaced by a bubbly Shannon who once again stepped up for her team. She didn’t have much to do but she made sure that she kept the crowd and teammates entertained with her starting positions! We were playing some nice football now, with Grace and Lexie seeing lots of the ball and carrying a real threat, clever interchanges and both super rapid, but Deeping defended fiercely and the breakthrough wouldn’t come. Just when the coaches were starting to feel a bit of tension, India, whose corners had been exceptional all day, scored straight from one, up and beyond the retreating keeper to settle the nerves again. 8 minutes later Grace who had received the ball in a pocket of space on the edge of the area and with great composure and skill rolled Lexie in with a deft pass and Lex did the rest. This time there was to be no Deeping comeback as Coton managed the rest of the game without incident to secure another hard fought, important win. Grace looked a little shocked to be voted player of the match by the Deeping Girls but it was no less than her committed, skilful debut deserved.

We look forward to welcoming Deeping to Coton Rec next week for the return fixture and another tough battle 👍⚽️

A lovely sunny morning at Coton Rec with the grass freshly cut and the pitch looking immaculate. Coton U15 Girls’ first game at home for 3 months and we welcomed Chesterton Eagles who have been struggling in the league but arrived on a high, having just reached the league cup final. We started briskly for a change and immediately took control, dominating territory and possession with some pleasingly quick, accurate, short passing. We were creating chances but the shots were getting blocked by a determined defence and when they got through the Chesterton keeper was equal to them, plucking several shots out of the air with ease. Just as the coaches were starting to get a bit twitchy because our dominance wasn’t turning into goals, the ball was played to India on the edge of the box and she took a touch and unleashed a crisp strike through the defender’s legs into the left-hand corner of the net. Chesterton occasionally broke into Coton territory but Annie, AJ, Tes and Bam comfortably dealt with the threats and stayed engaged in the game because of the way that the team patiently worked the ball around the pitch and they all played with great composure and control, rarely giving up possession. Pauline is such a technical player but also does a lot of the team’s dirty work – battling for possession, tracking runners and winning tackles and today was no different – her hard work for the team allowed others to play and her fellow midfielders took full advantage. Ilazki. playing against her old team, was immaculate displaying her brilliant first touch and simple, effective passing, releasing runners and keeping the team ticking over. Kate’s all-round game is so strong now but it is still her passing ability that marks her out – she can pick a pass like no one else and when you’ve got willing runners like Mads, Emilia and India she can open up teams at will. Most of the Coton threat came down the left with Mads dominant initially then, soon after she and Emilia had switched wings, Emilia went into overdrive, speeding past the Chesterton defence and striking an unstoppable shot into the very corner of the net with her supposedly weaker left foot. Soon after Kate side footed in classy finish after the ball broke to her just inside the area and then, just before half time, Emily got what her strong and determined first half performance deserved, cooly slotting home after the keeper could only parry a powerful Pauline shot from distance. With Cha injured, Shannon had stepped up to play in goal for the first half but with little to do he was desperate to take the gloves off and see what she could do. And what a half she had, playing some wonderful first time passes to spread the play and exploit space including one curling through ball to release India on the right who outpaced the defence and struck a thunderbolt across the keeper into the far corner. Shannon proceeded to rack up 4 goals of her own with some high-quality finishing including a perfect hattrick which was rounded off by nodding in a corner at the far post. Our attacking players were given the time and space to play by our rock-solid defence and another all-action display from Seyma who hounded and harassed the opposition like only she can. Such a selfless, team player. Pauline escaped her marker on the left wing to prod home a clever finish from jut inside the box and Mads wrapped up another excellent personal and team display with a curling left foot shot from distance just before the final whistle sounded. Well done girls, some really eye catching and high-quality passing football today. Despite the heavy defeat, Chesterton’s heads never dropped and, as always, it was a pleasure to host them as they always play the game in the right spirit. 👍⚽️ ... See MoreSee Less

Another tight game as Coton U15 Girls made the short trip across to Girton to take on unbeaten Cambridge City. City have a fantastic group of skilful U14s so we knew this would be a tough test. Poor for the first 10, giving away a soft goal, our girls slowly grew into the game. Weathering an early storm, with Cha making some awesome stops, before pressure on the City backline caused a mixup and the ball out to Shannon for a composed strike from distance for 1-1. As we approached the end of the first half, both teams had had chances and the game been pretty even, but our luck was out when an innocuous backpass took a bobble over Cha’s foot and into our net. We felt we edged the 2nd half, although City are always a threat with their pacey wingers, powerful striker and quality midfield. But from a kick out, Shannon touched it back to Kate to release Lexie’s run and she calmly slotted in at the near post for 2-2. A fair result and would have been harsh to lose, with neither team quite doing enough to deserve the win. Good, strong football and exciting to watch, if a little tense at times!! Well done girls 👍⚽️ ... See MoreSee Less

Sun shining and back to winning ways for Coton U15 Girls away against Newmarket this morning. A great performance all round, with Newmarket pushing us the whole way to a narrow victory. An early high bouncing cross, was neatly poked in by Lexie to open the scoring and not long after, Mads won a clearance and slipped it on to Kate, who fed Lexie to cut in for a composed finish near post. Good play for the rest of the half by both teams. Cha, Annie, AJ, Bam, Lia and Tes putting in a defensive shift. Kate, Pauline, Mads and Ilazki classy in midfield, and Shannon, Lexie, Emilia and India creating many chances on the attack. Newmarket will be very proud of their players, scoring two brilliant goals in the second half, but with Emilia brought down in the box, and Shannon handing the pen to Lexie to fire in, and then Emilia herself slotting home late on, the scoreline finished 2-4. Cracking stuff girls 👍⚽️ ... See MoreSee Less

Coton U15 Girls took on Rushden & Diamonds on the 3G at Comberton this morning in a cup semi that had it all…well,…other than the result!!

In typical fashion, Rushden started this game stronger! And although we’d managed to get the better of this team in both league matches this season, the early intent was clear - Rushden had arrived with the sole intention of getting to the cup final. AJ, Tes and Cha weathered the early storm, Bam and Lia worked the ball down the lines, but our midfield struggled to get the ball down and put any passes together, whereas Rushden were strong (and fair) in the tackles, chasing everything. So it was definitely against the run of play when nice work from Alice and Indie won us a corner, fired in by Mads, dropping kindly for a poked finish deflecting off AJ and in. We’ll take it! Now we were starting to play. Lexie bursting behind their defence on the right, Indie on the left, and Shannon orchestrating play from up top. While standards had dipped from many of our girls in this half, that could not be said for Shannon who was playing brilliantly. Kate, Pauline and Mads were growing into the game in the middle, starting to get that ball moving around, but still too many poor touches and mistakes. A chance gifted to the Rushden striker who made no mistake with the calm finish. And then frustration again, making trouble for ourselves in our own box and the Rushden winger gifted a shot from out wide that, to be fair, she absolutely banged for a screamer, up and over the stranded Cha. From 1-0 up to 1-2 down in the space of only a few minutes and both goals of our own making. Ilazki into the middle now, looking to get on the ball and feed the runners on the wings. Annie in next to Seyma at the back and both playing well, moping up and good decisions being made on when to play and when to clear. Indie zipped in a quality corner that AJ thundered her head against, but the post would deny her. Ball worked nicely across to Kate, but her finish went wide. Shannon intercepted a ball out and was in 1v1 on the keeper, but her shot was too straight and collected up. A trip on the edge of the box and a chance for Indie to strike a free kick special, but the Rushden keeper caught well. It would end up being a half to forget as, again, unnecessary loss of possession in the middle of the field caught our defence out of position and their striker able to run through for another good finish. Very unusual for our girls in defence, who have had an amazing season so far, to have conceded 3 goals a single half. So as we came in at the break, we’d given ourselves a bit of a hill, not yet a mountain, to climb.

Second half started nervously. Rushden came out strong again, but we were on it now and the lions share of possession was with us. Chances were being created, but the Rushden sweeper was playing so well and we just couldn’t find a way through. Then the hill became a mountain when Rushden struck again, and another mistake by our middle for a carbon copy of the last goal, and a simple tap in for their striker. Okay, so the story was clear; you don’t come back from 1-4 down with only 30 left on the clock…surely? But what we all witnessed next, players, coaches and parents, would be a pretty damn good attempt! Pauline executed a masterclass in close control with a ball under pressure and crafted chance after chance for the runners on the wings. Bam was a player possessed, giving no time to their winger and springing out down the wing, combining with Indie, Kate and Mads. Mads herself was in the wars. An elbow has caught her in the first half, but she was back on again after mopping up the blood, but then a late tackle caught her ankle and she had to hobble off again. Tes and Lia tag-teamed the right back position, both strong in the tackle and brilliant in the build up. The first time precision passes were coming off now in the middle. Alice making the running up top and Emilia down the right side. Surely Rushden couldn’t hold out? The ball bounced up and hit a defender’s arm and, whilst a little unfortunate, the penalty was the correct decision, Shannon dispatching it well, into the right side of the goal for 2-4. Lexie on now up top, linking well and using the ball to good effect. It felt inevitable that a chance was coming, but when it did, it would slide agonisingly the wrong side of the post. Another late challenge and another free kick. Indie struck it well, and keeper beaten, but just wouldn’t dip in time as it flew over the crossbar. Emilia danced on the wing, round one player, then a next, and into the box for the 3rd player to leave a leg out that caused Emilia to tumble. The ref gave another pen, against the backdrop of strong protest from the Rushden lino. When the dust settled, Shannon banged in her second low to the right, just past the outstretched keeper. Only a few minutes left on the clock, and it was all Coton now. Rushden were playing for time (we’d have done the same!), slowing the game down, but the ref was having none of it and was adding up the minutes. 6 of injury time. More Coton pressure. Emilia down the wing and into the box, a brilliant shot but keeper tipping it onto the crossbar. But then the killer… possesion lost in the middle again and Rushden were through for the final nail in the coffin, a good finish, low and past Cha. Our bench felt deflated, but the girls were still going. Super proud of the effort today, never say die! Indie into the box, twisting again and the Rushden defender lunged into the tackle tripping Indie for another penalty. Both benches couldn’t really believe this game! Madness! Shannon stepped up, put her shot into that same right side for 4-5, but the keeper had guessed right again and this time the arm to it was strong and a fantastic save to keep the score at 3-5. No time left now and final few seconds before that whilst blew.

Gutted! Gutted to go out of the cup. But a great second half from our girls, and great game played by both sides. Rushden go through to the final as worthy winners, taking the few chances they had, and certainly playing the best football we can remember from them. Some outstanding performances on their team. Same for us, but unfortunately not enough goals today to show for it. That’s football, and that’s why we love it! Well done girls 👍⚽️

Great write up, shame about the result, ❤️

A brilliant game & some fantastic football. Just a shame it wasn’t the final as it was such a good watch! Great write up 👏🏻⚽️💎

Another great report, sad to lose but that's football. As long as all the girls enjoyed the game.

It was with muted trepidation that Coton U15 Girls returned to the scene of last season's surprise defeat at the hands of a Chesterton team who, on their day, can be a match for anyone in the division. Coach Sam had decided that getting to the match and hour before kick off(!) would be beneficial giving time for the girls to "wake up", however, there was still plenty of yawning going on whilst he put them through their paces in a vigorous pre-match session. The pitch, being described by some as a ploughed potato field, was bobbly and sticky to say the least which we knew would not assist our passing style of play. But by kick off, the girls had shaken off their bed heads and looked up for the fight.

The game started with Coton in the ascendency with plenty of possession but no real chances to test the Chesterton keeper, Ilazki and Pauline controlling the centre of the park, Indie and Emilia bombing down the flanks ably supported by Bam and Lia but, as seems to happen all too frequently in our matches, after 15 minutes of dominance, a breakaway by Chesterton's most dangerous weapon, Ella, saw her alone through on goal and smartly dinking the ball over the onrushing poorly Cha to open the scoring. 1-0 to the home side. Here we go again were the thoughts on the sideline. But this team never quits.
Another 10 minutes of probing without success, until the ball fell to Shannon 25 yards from goal and without thinking unleashed a thunderous shot high into the Chesterton net giving the keeper no chance at all. 5 minutes later, and almost a carbon copy, this time from Kate and 2-1 Coton. The sigh of relief was audible. We were on the front foot now with AJ and Tes confidently snuffing out any Chesterton chances, breaking into our half, starting wave after wave of lovely passing football on an oh-so-tricky pitch. Time for Alice, Lottie and Seyma to be introduced into the fray and they all slotted in seamlessly, keeping the momentum going. Alice marauding down the right. Lottie stylishly controlling the ball with some lovely short passing moves. Seyma, always reliable, always at pace, tackling anything that moved. Another great passing move saw us drive into the Chesterton area and the centre half lifting out an arm to stop a through ball. Penalty. Up stepped Kate and cooly slotted into the bottom left corner for 3-1 and half time.

After a "loud" pep talk from coach Darren, and more of the same requested, the 2nd half began as the first had ended with barnstorming runs down both flanks by Emilia, India, Alice and Bam in particular; the coaches loving the overlaps that come so naturally to Bam now. But it was India's driving run, beating 2 defenders and cooly slotting with her unfavored, but still magnificent, left foot that brought the next score. Lia, Tes, AJ, Seyma and Bam were never really troubled too much at the back but were always on the front foot to win tackles and make interceptions alongside playing some lovely confident passing along the backline. Our midfield had taken control of the game now and it was wave after wave of attacks. Kate was on hand to bring her well deserved hat-trick. Emilia was put through on goal and calmly slotted past the keeper to make it 6. An India corner found its way into the net…gotta claim those when they go in! Ball worked nicely across the box, but a nasty bobble meant Shannon could only swing at it, missing completely…did anyone else see that bobble Shannon?! 😅. But Alice, in on the act to make it 8, before finally the ball dropping nicely this time for Shannon to notch her 2nd. So 9-1 and the job was done.

There were stand out performances all over the pitch today with the whole team contributing to what was a very good performance, some very slick passing on a tricky pitch and the fact that Cha only touched the ball 3 times in the whole game shows the dominance of the performance. 3 massive games coming up: two against Cambridge City and a cup semi-final against Rushden, but if they play like that we should be fine. WELL DONE ALL!!!!!! 👍⚽️

It was with muted trepidation that Coton U15 Girls returned to the scene of last seasons surprise defeat at the hands of a Chesterton team who, on their day, can be a match for anyone in the division. Coach Sam had decided that getting to the match and hour before kick off(!) would be beneficial giving time for the girls to wake up, however, there was still plenty of yawning going on whilst he put them through their paces in a vigorous pre-match session. The pitch, being described by some as a ploughed potato field, was bobbly and sticky to say the least which we knew would not assist our passing style of play. But by kick off, the girls had shaken off their bed heads and looked up for the fight.
The game started with Coton in the ascendency with plenty of possession but no real chances to test the Chesterton keeper, Ilazki and Pauline controlling the centre of the park, Indie and Emilia bombing down the flanks ably supported by Bam and Lia but, as seems to happen all too frequently in our matches, after 15 minutes of dominance, a breakaway by Chestertons most dangerous weapon, Ella, saw her alone through on goal and smartly dinking the ball over the onrushing poorly Cha to open the scoring.
After a loud pep talk from coach Darren, and more of the same requested, the 2nd half began as the first had ended with barnstorming runs down both flanks by Emilia, India, Alice and Bam in particular; the coaches loving the overlaps that come so naturally to Bam now. But it was Indias driving run, beating 2 defenders and cooly slotting with her unfavored, but still magnificent, left foot that brought the next score.

Coton U15 Girls at home on the Rec, for their 6th league game of the season and against Rushden and Diamonds; a battle of two evenly matched teams and a precursor to the upcoming vs league cup semifinal.

With AJ injured and Alice and Amy late absentees, Coton had squad of 13. We knew that on a muddy pitch against a team that plays with intensity and physicality the girls that were playing were going to have to dig deep and show a lot of fight.

The first half was tight affair with neither team giving the other any time and space and scoring chances few and far between. Rushden had a clear strategy of looking to transition quickly and once into the Coton half to release their speedy wingers with passes down the line or their rapid striker with balls over the top but generally they couldn’t quite get the weight of pass right and Cha gratefully claimed numerous through balls in or around the edge of the box. When the Rushden passing was on point or their midfield beat Coton’s press, the Coton backline of Lia, Emilia, Tes, Bam and Annie were up to the task. Lia played on the front foot and with purpose and put in some hefty tackles and vital interceptions, Tes hounded and harassed and ran and ran, Bam was resolute, and Emilia was simply outstanding playing only her second game at centre back and not putting a foot wrong all day.

Coton had a bit more possession and moved the ball well in patches and did pose Rushden some problems. The main danger was Lexie’s pace on the right wing as she repeatedly burned past her marker and zoned in the penalty area, released by some excellent first time passing by Shannon and Mads. Only some excellent defending by the tall diamonds centre who read the danger and cut the crosses out prevented potential scoring opportunities. The other threat came from India’s consistently pinpoint corners which lead to Ilazki poking agonisingly wide of the far post from close range and a scuffed shot being deflected up and onto the bar and over. At this point coach Sam said what the other coaches were all thinking and the football gods dictated, that Coton would rue the missed chances and that Rushden would score with their first. The clock was ticking down to halftime when the inevitable happened and Rushen scored though it was a half chance at best, a fantastic finish with no one at fault. The ball was played at pace into the Rushden striker who was standing with her back to goal just inside the area and she turned her marker and in the same movement hit an unstoppable strike into the roof of the net.

It had been such a tight contest, Rushden were buzzing and it felt like it might now be a tough contest for Coton to get back into. Never doubt these girls though, years of playing together have built up a serious level of trust and resilience. Rather than it causing their heads to drop, the goal just spurred them into devastating action. Pretty much from the kick off and after some neat passing in the middle, Shannon swept a lovely pass to Mads on the edge of the box who created space for herself by quickly shifting the ball from right to left with a classic “Hain Shuffle” and made no mistake, smashing the ball into the corner of the net with her left foot from 10 yards out. The coaches and parents were still celebrating what felt like a vital goal when Coton raided the ball from Rushden’s kick off, worked the ball calmly through Tes, Ilazki, Pauline and Kate before Kate’s hit a perfectly weighted ball set Lexie through, on goal and as we have come to expect, she calmy rolled the ball under the stunned keeper for 2:1 which was immediately followed by the half-time whistle. Rushden went into the break shellshocked wondering what had just happened to them while Coton were jubilant though not getting carried away.

The quality of the football in the second half was better from both teams with both looking to pass through the thirds and work their way up the pitch but it felt like Coton were getting on top with most of the possession now in the Rushden half and the pressure on the Rushden goal building. Pauline, Ilazki, Kate Mads were starting to win the midfield battle with determined and aggressive pressing and tackling out of possession and calmness, composure and skill in possession. Ilazki had her best game since returning from injury – growing in confidence and starting to display her lovely range of passing as well as some brave headers and big tackles. Mads was Mads, racking up another 9 out 10 performance with her excellent all-round game, such an intelligent player. Kate was equally strong in and out of possession, an iron fist in a velvet glove. Pauline put in another huge shift, lots of tireless running and tackling for the team. Bam was having another excellent game down the left-hand side – her decision making and execution having come on leaps and bound in the last few weeks. India had a couple of chances to get through a get shots away but the ball didn’t quite break for her. Shannon worked her socks off in a difficult role where she was often quite isolated and showed some lovely moments of quality. Annie, defended brilliantly again and added an attacking element to her game, driving into space past the Rusden midfield on numerous occasions. Another mention for Emilia who really was the thorn in the Rushden attack’s side – she outpaced, out battled and outplayed them all game and led an excellent Coton rearguard which meant that for the second week in a row, Cha didn’t have a save to make. Cha still had a strong contribution to the game with her excellent sweeping and top-notch goal kicking from both hand and floor.

With Coton in the ascendancy and several half-chances passed up, it felt like Coton would have to hold onto their lead but then Coton had a slice of luck as Lexie hit a cross aimed at Shannon bursting into the middle of the area but sliced it slightly and it curled perfectly into the far corner of the net. Rushden nearly pulled a goal back with a wicked strike from distance which clipped the top of the bar but other than that Coton managed the game out well for a hard fought and well-deserved victory.

A brilliant game of football. Well done both teams. Some real quality out there today 👍⚽️

Coton U15 Girls were back to Girton Rec this week for another tussle against Cambridge City - this time a friendly against their U16s team on the larger pitch. Both teams had a number of absences meaning that subs were thin on the ground. But neither this or the inclement weather was going to get in the way of what has become an annual fixture. Paul and his team are always a pleasure to play against, the games are always close and fairly fought and there is always some good banter on the sidelines. Plus the customary appearance from City Chief Scout Richard is always a pleasure too!!

The opening quarter of the game was pretty scrappy as both teams got to grips with each other and the conditions. Coton having more possession and territory, but City always posing a threat on the break with the pace of their forward line. Jess, a player who we had hoped would join us in the summer, was particularly rapid and proved a handful but was brilliantly marshalled by Mads who had dropped into defence to do a job for her team and was all round excellent (again). Annie and Tes also stood up to be counted. Tes is having an exceptional season. Tes excelled in her one on one battles, using her pace and guile to avert danger and start attacks with her simple, effective passing. Annie really played on the front foot today and was dominant throughout, time and time again using her anticipation and strength to step out and steal the ball from City's attackers. Bam had a tricky start but got better and better as the game wore on and is starting to offer so much going forward with her direct running and improved crossing ability, it is adding another dimension to our play. Sweeping up brilliantly behind the back line was the ever dependable Cha who was called into action more regularly than we would have liked - consistently bursting out of her goal to clear the ball from the toes of City's attackers.

As the half wore on it was a bit of a stalemate and then, out of nowhere Kate scored one of her worldies. Seeing the City keeper of her line and the ball sitting up nicely for her just outside the box she lobbed a sumptuous volley into the far corner of the goal. This seemed to settle our team and the girls started to get their passing game going with Ilazki, Lottie, Kate and Pauline moving the ball nicely in midfield, freeing India and Emilia on the flanks and Alice down the middle. However, not creating many clear cut chances before the half time whistle blew.

Unfortunately an injury to a City player meant they had to drop to 10 players for the second half, so we dropped to 10 too. Our girls started the half really brightly with Pauline and Emilia becoming increasingly influential. It was a proper all action display from Pauline, she was everywhere - winning tackles, driving forward and making everything tick. Emilia was now causing the City right back all sorts of problems with her pace, tenacity and directness, twice getting through one on one only to be denied by the keeper. Kate was excellent also, working hard off the ball and so aware and composed when on it. Lottie and Ilazki were disciplined in holding the midfield, winning countless second balls and making numerous interceptions from which most of our attacks were started. If there was a small criticism, it was that too often we looked for the killer pass before it was really on, when one more simple pass would have been the better option. But overall the passing patterns and ball retention were good. India had been playing well and seemed to be growing in confidence with some deft touches and a couple of bursting runs, one of which ended with her shooting narrowly wide of the far post, and another that sat up awkwardly, just as she was about to tap in, and so went over the bar.

As so often happens when teams don't take their chances, City equalised against the run of play. A nicely weighted ball over the top had the Coton defence back pedalling and the ball hit the back of the City striker and fall nicely into her path, enabling a cool finish past the stranded Cha. Maybe a bit of luck but the threat of the ball over the top had always been there and there were a number of other times when these had led to half chances. The City forwards would have felt they could have been more clinical but they also would have been cursing Cha who made a couple of fantastic saves with her hands and feet.

Coton heads could have dropped at losing the lead, but we know that these girls are resilient, calm and that they just kept on playing. It's rare that Emilia doesn't capitalise on a one on one and when she outsprinted the City defence to go through for a third time she made no mistake, coolly rolling the ball under the onrushing city keeper with her left foot for 1-2. A reshuffle from Coach Sam brought India back on left wing with Bam, who had been very good in that role, returning to left back. It proved and excellent move as India soon weaved her way past the city defence on the left, rounded the keeper and flicked the ball into the far corner of the net with the outside of her right foot. Lovely finish. 1-3 and effectively game over.

A decent game in the circumstances. Inevitability scrappy at times in the conditions, but some brilliant passages of play and some quality goals to entertain the coaches and parents on a wet and windy morning. Well done girls from both teams 👍⚽️

Massive cup game for Coton U15 Girls this morning over at Girton against Cambridge City U14 Girls. Both teams went into the game undefeated this season, and both teams got to fulltime still undefeated! So penalties would decide this one, and who would be going through to the next round.

An early start, but only a short trip over to the neighbouring village of Girton, for a tie with a team we’ve not played in several years. But we know how good they were back then, and had heard about the year-on-year improvement they’ve been making, so much so that they decided to move the team up into our age group this season. To be drawn against each other in the quarters always meant it was going to be tough on one of the form teams so far this season. The game kicked off on the large, but deceptively bobbly pitch. City quickly pressing us as we tried to take control of the midfield. A close battle you’d probably have to say City edged over the course of the game. The first ten minutes were tight, very tight. Neither team making an opening but City in the ascendancy, and lots of work to do for AJ and Tes in the middle of our defence, Bam on the left, and this week Emilia starting at right back to counter the exceptional pace of their left winger. Cha was her usual composed self, plucking balls that made their way through to her and whizzing out to the edge of her box to set us back on the attack. Bam was up against another speedy winger, but was in good form and won all the early battles, never once letting her get away. In the middle, Pauline and Kate were chasing lots but never really managing to get hold of the ball, sometimes a bad first touch, sometimes too many touches, but more often an awkward bounce, or that quick press from the City midfield. Shannon worked hard up top, always taking the ball in well and quickly turning it to either Indie on the left or Lexie on the right. Both of our wingers growing into the game and giving the City backline something to think about. We’d weathered the early pressure well, and as we were just starting to feel hopeful of creating some chances of our own, City struck; a corner allowed to bounce and no one properly attacking the ball to clear, it was an easy tap in for their dangerous striker. We’d not registered a single shot on goal and were already behind, chasing the game against a quality team who were moving the ball quickly and simply, with us chasing shadows. But then a brilliant moment from Kate, perfect first touch and a ball fired through into Lexie’s run. Lexie had the pace on their defender and she was away just enough to reach the ball first ahead of their keeper. Lexie’s shot beat the keeper, but not the post, rebounding into the middle of the area. So again the chase was on, and again Lexie first to the ball to poke an effort in and to draw us level. The rest of the half was even. No clear chances for either side, but both defences kept busy. Amy came on on the left wing, and Alice through the middle now. Amy made some great runs in behind, just not quite able to get a shot away, and Alice’s strength and linkup play, was a new threat for the City back line to deal with. Mads strong in the tackles and hurrying their midfield. Tenacious and committed. A really good captain’s performance, and Bam was just fantastic. Best game we’ve seen from her this season. Not just winning her personal battle but involved in all our build up on the left, and overlapping to whip crosses in. We had reached halftime, but feeling optimistic for the 2nd. We were playing maybe the best team we’ve faced in many years. But our girls had stepped up and we were fully in it now.

Quick break and back for more of the same. Defences were giving nothing away. As both teams pressed for that likely to be decisive 2nd goal, both defences stood up to be counted. City maybe had the edge in midfield, but we looked dangerous and a quick pass here or there, freeing up the wide players was always on the cards. Ilazki on now. Still getting back to full fitness after her injury, it was a tough game to come into with no time on the ball for that calm passing we know she does so well. Some good moments, but mostly her defensive prowess called upon today, and bravery in heading. Not long left now, so time to gamble. Penalties are stressful and so tough on the losing team, so if we could avoid them, that felt like the thing to do. So, Emilia up now into the attack to use that ridiculous pace, and Annie slotting in at right back. Unfortunately our midfield wasted a few of the early opportunities to put Emilia in behind, and City responded by switching their speediest player to Emilia’s side. But this gave Indie more opportunities on the right, and she went so close to putting us ahead with a number of great runs in behind, that just lacked that final banging shot that we know she has. So that was it. Two great teams, playing some decent football, but mostly cancelling each other out. City will likely feel their didn’t have their best game, and same for us, but it wasn’t for lack of intent. Both teams working really hard, but not able to unlock that door and the game finished 1-1.

So, to penalties. For us, Shannon, Lexie, Pauline, Kate and Mads put their hands up. So proud of you for that. No matter what happened, you can be proud of taking on that responsibility for your team. City won the toss and opted to take first. Their midfielder calmly stepping up and sliding the ball to the left of Cha between the sticks. 1-0. Game on! Shannon stepped up for us to take the first one. Practiced in training and doing exactly what was asked. A simple ball struck low into the corner. No stopping that. 1-1. But City were next and another quality strike, this time the other side and out of the reach of a diving Charlotte. 2-1. Lexie next. Confident as she walked up and we’ve seen what she can do in training. But the pressure in a real game is so different. Although, not for Lexie, again a perfect strike, well away from the reach of the City keeper for 2-all. Again, a great pen from City, no chance for Cha, 3-2 and pressure back on us. Pauline now, and a nervous line of girls on the halfway line as Pauline slowly made the long walk up. Take a breath, and…Oh! Top bins!! No keeper saves that. 3-3! Pressure mounting now on the remaining takers. The City player looked nervy as she walked up. With this pressure, do nothing clever, put your foot through the ball, and hope! Their player did everything right, another good strike, but Cha had guessed right and made the block to cheers from our girls. Kate now, and a chance to take a lead. Immense pressure as she made the walk. Calm, and a decent strike, but the City keeper stretched and got a hand to it. The ball was trickling towards the line, but not quickly enough. Still 3-3 and no nails left. The last taker for City now. Looking to place it in the top corner, well out of the reach of Cha, but too much on it and a miss. Argh! Need nerves of steel now, so Mads was up for the final penalty. Taking her time. Set. And never in doubt! 3-4. Slotted away for the win and turning to see the charge of our players to congratulate her.

So hard on City. What a team. We’ll have to face them twice more this season for, no doubt, two more tense encounters. But, wow! Well done our girls! You squeaked through and can now look forward to the semis after Christmas👍⚽️

As my Gran would say: it wasn’t a vintage performance! Coton U15 Girls, playing over at St Ives in the early kickoff today, had some good moments along with some frustrating ones. St Ives battled well and deserved their goals, but in the end our girls got the job done, if not particularly in style.

The big pitch seemed like it would suit us and the intensity in our warmup gave us reason to think the girls were going to be on it this morning. Plenty of early endeavour, particularly with Emilia’s running down our left wing, India on the right, and Amy, Shannon and Alice causing St Ives problems up front, but our first few chances were put over the crossbar. After the brilliant exploits of last weekend’s friendly, we tried out the same 3-4-2-1 formation, but today this narrow shape meant our midfield didn’t have their normal passing options to the wings and we were guilty of holding on too long or turning into trouble. At the back we looked solid; Mads flanked by Bam and Ilazki, left and right, and we thought this could be a quiet morning for Cha. Not so! Some nice footwork by Indie on our right, recycling the ball across the midfield and a through ball for Emilia to run onto and shoot. Denied by the post, but Amy in for the follow-up on her left for 0-1. Not long after, a ball in to Kate, set Shannon free in on goal. Her shot saved by the keeper but she reacted well to the loose ball and tucked it away for our second. Late arrivals, Annie and Seyma, were on now. But St Ives reacted well to going two behind and started to create some chances. We were missing the pace of AJ at the back today, but Cha was quick off her line to clear a through ball, averting the danger. However, this time we gave it straight back and with Cha stranded, their striker neatly lifted her shot into the empty goal. 1-2. Our turn to up the tempo. Maybe not to our normal standards, but our passing was getting going, Mads to Bam, Bam to Emilia and back to Kate. Kate through-ball and Shannon tucked it away for 1-3. Better. But again St Ives came back. Beating our backline for pace, their striker timed her run perfectly and seeing Cha come out to close the angle, she chipped a finish that Cha got a hand to but not enough to push over the bar. A nice finish for 2-3. As we approached half time, Emilia cut the ball back to Ilazki on the edge of the box. Good first touch meant the shot was on, which Ilazki duly fired low into the bottom corner. Really good, simple football for 2-4.

Switching back to our normal 4-3-3 after the break and although we never really got out of 2nd gear, overall we looked more balanced, and composure on the ball was improving. Pauline controlled well in the middle of the park from a St Ives clearance, and quickly fed the ball in for Shannon to run in and tuck the ball across the keeper to make it 2-5. Seyma sent a ball in to Amy up top. A slight heavy first touch, past the defenders, was made up for by Amy. So rapid off the mark, and first to the ball and sliding it under the keeper for our sixth. The game was getting away from St Ives now. Ilazki, calm in the middle, and her simple ball found Alice to touch, turn and shoot for seven. Amy at right-back now, won the ball, inside to Pauline, Indie’s run opening up the space for a pass in to Kate. Her turn and precision left foot in off the post and 2-8. More from Kate now. Charging up the right side and able to cut a cross back to Emilia for a left foot top bins finish and nine. Pretty much over now, but just time for Pauline to whip a corner and Annie arriving at the back post on the volley. Ball off the crossbar, down and back out. Our bench and the Ref couldn’t see if the ball had crossed the line, but their Lino had the best view and gave it for Annie’s first of the season and our tenth goal, before the final whistle blew.

Seems a bit harsh not to be more upbeat after putting away ten goals, but standards are so high now and these girls have raised our expectations. We’ll need to be back on it next weekend in the cup when we face a Cambs City team unbeaten in many years 👍⚽️

Persistent rain on Coton Rec looked like it might be an issue, but the recently scarified pitch was looking in fine fettle and no one wanted to postpone Coton U15 Girl friendly up against Royston U16s. Both teams came into the game unbeaten this season and having never played each other before which made it an exciting prospect.

The girls knew that Royston would be confident, quick and physical and that they would need to match these attributes to earn the right to play their football. As so often is the case, however, we started off in zombie mode and Royston scored from their first attack before the coaches had even had time to drink their mugs of tea. A pass down the right-hand channel, a cross into the box, a lot of ball watching and a deflected own goal at the far post. It was the worst possible start.

Sometimes these goals in these games can set the tone and dictate the course of the match, but not today. While the coaches were still choking on their tea, the girls got about doing what they do best – winning the ball, getting it down on the floor and passing it to a girl in the same coloured shirt. The control came quickly and Coton were soon camped in the Royston half, moving the ball from left to right with Mads Pauline and Kate running the game with excellent first touches and lovely short, sharp passing sequences until they could find the spare player in front of them – Alice all pace and power on the right, India trickery and skill on the left and Shannon playing out of her skin down the middle. Lots of possession, lots of pressure but only half chances until the move of the game (or the season?), a sequence of passes involving 8 different players ended with a stunning volleyed finish from Shannon on the right-hand edge of the box across the keeper into the far corner.

The rest of the fist half continued to be played in the Royston half, but with the constant threat of Royston’s excellence on the counterattack looming – one of the best we have faced. Royston broke with accuracy, skill and speed and one of the most pleasing aspects of the day was our ability to deal with the danger with assuredness and calmness despite missing 2 of our defensive mainstays. Emilia playing her first game at centre back was consistently excellent with an innate sense of when to stand the attacker up and when to step in and nick the ball. Tes delivered another near faultless performance - gliding over the pitch, never letting a quality striker get the better of her and passing with the simplicity and composure that the coaches always preach. Lia delivered possibly her best performance in a Coton shirt (and she’s been wearing one for about 8 years!); bringing all the attributes that we know she’s got to the front and really taking responsibility, - passing when possible, clearing when needed, hard tackling when required, and staying alert and reading the game enabling her to make some vital interceptions. At left back Annie was her normal, unfussy self – bravely winning her personal battles and making good decisions when in possession.

Half time came and we just asked our girls for more of the same please and that is what we got. The second half started in the same vein as the first with Coton’s midfield trio controlling the game but with Royston still a constant threat on the counter but with neither team being able to nudge in front. That was until coach Andy made a tactical change, and the switch to 442 soon paid dividends with Amy sliding a clever inside pass to free Alice who calmy rolled the ball under the keeper for a goal that her hard running and selfless work deserved. Amy couldn’t replicate her goalscoring exploits of last week but her all round display was one to be really excited about – pace, directness and a vicious shot! Amy’s ability to slot so seamlessly into a team that has been playing together for so long is a real credit to her.

Moving into the last quarter of the game Coton were firmly on top and their superiority got what it deserved when Pauline ended a slaloming run and capped off an all-round brilliant midfield performance by sliding the ball under the keeper for 3:1. At this point it felt that Coton might run away from Royston with Kate and Shannon dictating play in the middle but in reality Royston were never out of the game and a free kick on the edge of the box after a quick break, and unstoppable strike form their excellent No.9 - 3:2 and game on!

Coton had shuffled the pack and switched a number of players positions and for the first real period the game we looked wobbly and were inches away from conceding an equaliser when the Royston striker broke through and look to have struck the equaliser only to see her shot cannon off the far post and run across the goal line into Cha’s grateful hands. Cha didn’t have many saves to make today but was always focused, commanded her area with great confidence and distributed the ball well, both short and long.

The game was temporarily in the balance but in a flash it was all over. Mads picked the ball up in space inside her own half and played a perfectly weighted through ball for Emilia to burst onto and cooly slot into the corner of the net for 4:2. A really good game played in an excellent spirit against very difficult opposition 👍⚽️

An early morning kickoff for Coton U15 Girls in their cup fixture against Saffron Walden at the Rec today. It’s been a couple of years since we last faced this team, and we were conscious they were in great form coming into the fixture, sitting on top of their league. There were so many positives today for our girls, and we’ll get to that, but let’s start with a couple of negatives…

In typical style, we started this one slowly. It’s sometimes hard watching on from the bench when mistakes are being repeated, passes not completed, challenges soft, too long being spent on the ball, but only really because we know how good these players are when they are on it. So bite our tongues we did, and watch on in frustration we did. Saffron Walden were clear underdogs in this game but they came today fully up for it and looking to cause an upset. Their players were running faster than us, tackling harder than us and they took a deserved lead after a succession of failed attempts to clear our lines finally concluded with the Saffron Walden striker darting through and taking her chance well for 0-1. We hoped this might wake us up a bit, but alas…not yet! More Saffron Walden pressure and our attack was left watching the game go on behind them. But slowly, slowly the shift was coming. Starting mainly from the back, with ever dependable Cha, mopping up our mistakes and setting us back on the front foot. An all action performance from AJ, chasing down and putting in the big tackles, and with Tes alongside, looking calm and composed, putting her foot on the ball and distributing well. That Bam-Emilia link on the left was starting to show fruits. Kate and Pauline were growing into the game, first touch improving, and that Mads Twist-and-Turn was on display again, confounding their midfield as she skipped away. Alice was using her strength up top to hold and bring our wingers into the game. Indie on the right, still a little tentative after a difficult start to her season, but so dangerous with her pace and those thundering corners. Nicely timed tackles and follow-up passing down the right by Lia. Lia to Kate, Kate to Mads, Mads to Kate, flick to Pauline, back to Kate and Emilia was released. What football! Charging through and making sure with the finish to draw us level. Nice! Time for a switch. Lexie on now, exploding with pace down that right side, and Annie on at the back, shoring up the defence with her strength and touch. Ball off the cross bar. And then the post. Kate, fouled on the edge of the box, stepped up and struck the free kick. Good save Keeper, but Emilia, ever alert to the ball, tucked away the rebound for 2-1. Another substitution, and a welcome to Amy, our new international(!) signing. We were moving the ball around nicely now, so Saffron Walden looked happy when the half time whistle blew and they could pause and regroup, and go again?

But the 2nd half was quality from us though. Under the floodlights for midweek training, Amy had teased us a little with what she could do, but now it was on full display; quick to the loose ball, and then the pace, burning through to open her account with a neat low finish and 3-1. But not finished there. One-two with India then cut back and Amy fired a banger into the far bottom corner. 4-1. Here we go! She may not know everyone’s name yet, but she certainly knows where the goal is!! Mads at the back now and game over for the Saffron Walden forward line - she wasn’t letting anyone through. Pauline through ball for a deep Indie run and outside of the boot low finish 5-1. Bam out wide, stepping in and linking brilliantly with Kate and Indie down the wing. Good pressure on the Walden throw out wide and ball worked across to Indie on the edge of the box for a driven finish, low into the corner 6-1. Very good 2nd half for Indie. Back to her old self, chasing down defenders and bursting through with the ball. Such a handful when she’s on it. On fire Amy touch and quick shot, off the far post and in for her hat trick 7-1. Twinkle toes Pauline fouled on the edge. Her free kick tipped past the post by the diving keeper. Indie corner and left foot volley from Amy. 8-1 and 4 goals on her debut! Power and pace from Alice down the right, and the left back unable to stop her. Indie burning pace chasing Kate’s through ball and a left foot finish 9-1. Another Indie corner. Scramble in the area and AJ with the finish for 10-1. AJ up top is super exciting and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Perfect weight of pass from Lexie to send in AJ for a neat near post finish 11-1. Phew! Catch your breath!! Full time!!!

Lots to try to remember. A real treat of a game from the girls. And unlikely as the final score makes it sound, Saffron Walden were really really good too. Fully deserving of the praise they received from our girls at the end. Completely makes sense the start to the season they’re having. But what a performance from our girls. You make us super proud! 👍⚽️

Short trip over to Cambourne as Coton U15 Girls took on their local rivals in the late kickoff. It’s been a few years since we’ve dropped points against Cambourne, but they have been steadily improving, and we knew this was definitely a banana-skin fixture.

Cambourne were out of the blocks from the off, and pressuring our back line. Only an outstanding performance by AJ, Tes with some timely interceptions, Lia strong in the tackle and Cha, quick off her line, collecting the through balls stopped us from going behind. Continued misplaced passes in the middle, under constant pressure from Cambourne, and our inability to release Emilia or Alice down the wings, was causing frustration. A succession of Cambourne corners that we struggled to clear properly, and the ball hardly ever in their half. If we had to choose a team to have an off-day against, Cambourne would be right up there as our last choice! Maybe not the strongest team we’ve faced so far this season, but definitely the toughest opponent. Under all this pressure, it felt like something was going to give, so a switch up in formation was needed, had to try something different. Alice up top now hurried and pressed, freeing up Emilia and Indie on the wings to start probing with their skill and pace. A couple of chances now for us, but just not able to finish under the pressure of the Cambourne defence and their new keeper. But then Kate did what Kate does best…turning and giving herself space 30 yards plus out, seeing the keeper off her line, she lobbed the ball over everyone and in. Somehow we’d seen off the pressure and had the lead at half time.

Next half the girls all picked up. Enthused by the goal, we began to play our football. Neat one-two’s, runners on the wings and strong defending. A really good, and different(!) second half. Cambourne were still in it and had their chances, but in the middle normal service had resumed, with Pauline classy on the ball, Mads strong and always picking the right passes, and Shannon and Kate always looking to release the wingers. A ball out to Emilia who cut inside and rolled a ball across to Kate. Lots of options with Alice and India running in on goal, but Kate was full of confidence now and opted to bang one into the top corner, in off the post to make it 0-2. More great play. Annie really powerful and Seyma’s pace at the back meant Cambourne were starting to sense the inevitable. Time for one more. Bam was having a really good second half. She slid the ball up to Emilia, touch inside to Kate and slipped into Emilia again for a long run in and finish near post for 3.

The final scoreline felt a lot more comfortable than us Coaches felt for most of that first half. Massive credit to the Cambourne players. A really good performance and a proper test for us today. We look forward to another tough one against you in the new year. 👍⚽️

Coton U15 Girls took on newly promoted Huntingdon Town, away in the early kickoff this morning. Three years have passed since these two team last met, with new faces for both sides along with the familiar ones.

Good start from Huntingdon. First to the balls and their quick press forcing us to misplace our passes. Pace up front gave our defensive pairing of AJ and Annie, flanked by Tes and Lia work to do, and we struggled to get a hold in the game. But then the breakthrough, with Lexie slipping a ball through to Emilia, slight heavy touch but quick to chase it and tuck a left foot ball under the outcoming keeper to open the scoring. A strong challenge by Lia with follow up ball into Kate to switch play across to Pauline, but Huntingdon were quick to close us down and we couldn’t find that killer pass. Then Mads won the ball in the middle and lifted a pass to Emilia’s run and a chip over the keeper for her second. We were starting to play now. Pauline was first to everything, and linking nicely between defence and the forward runs. Shannon’s energy up top kept the Huntingdon fullbacks guessing before Lexie’s chipped ball dropped nicely to Emilia for another lob over the keeper and three! Half time was approaching but time for a Cha kick to Mads who neatly lifted the ball to Emilia again, beating one player, then forced a bit wide, but Emilia cleverly cut the ball back across goal to Indie for the tap in and our fourth. We thought we’d made it to half time and managed to contain those skilful and quick Huntingdon forwards, but some really nice play in the middle and their striker was released, in on goal and ready to strike. A certain goal but for a sliding challenge from AJ which might have got a bit of the ball, and defintely got a lot of the player. The resulting well taken penalty meant 1-4 at the break.

Team talk from Coach Darren and our girls were back out with renewed vigour. A Lexie corner, in to Kate for a set to Shannon who slammed her shot in, keeper getting a touch but not enough to keep it out. Now some nice stuff from Bam, working the ball with Emilia on that left wing, back in to Kate, on to Mads, Mads to Emilia, cut inside and again and another chipped finish to make it 6. Annie stepping in, winning the ball before it became a chance. Tes nicely snaffling out the through passes, Cha ever alert and with top distribution, and Lia keeping the pressure up with those long throws. A ball cut back to Mads to strike from distance. Again, their keeper getting a touch but not enough to keep it out for 1-7. Not long left now and the final whistle was an opportunity for our team to be happy with their result, but also to congratulate Huntingdon for a great game and massive improvement since we last faced each other.

Well done girls! Let’s see how long we can keep this run going 👍⚽️

An early start and long trip over to Wellingborough as Coton U15 Girls took on Rushden and Diamonds this morning. Always a competitive game between these sides, and we came away with the points but also a sense that we’d got a little lucky this time to have all of them!

A game where the defences were on top; Rushden with their sweeper dictating play and making good use of the highly impressive fullbacks, full of energy and pushing us back on the wings, and ourselves with AJ and Annie, both very solid flanked by Tes and Bam, there was no way through for the Rushden attack. It was scrappy in the middle as both sides got used to the bounce on a firm surface. But Mads and Pauline began to get control and we started to put together some nice combinations. Ahead of them, Kate, looked to feed the bursting runs of Emilia on the left and on the right Alice, so powerful, was giving their leftback a hard time. Up top, Lexie’s pace was causing trouble, but their quality sweeper meant Lexie was limited to speculative long range efforts. With no Cha today, Shannon started between the sticks, and big shout out to her, Lexie and Mads who took turns in goal, all doing fantastically to limit Rushden to only their single goal. Another ball through to Lexie and this time her shot could only be parried, falling perfectly to Emilia for the tap in. Lia on at right back, putting in big tackles and linking well with Kate and Alice ahead of her. And Ilazki in alongside Mads, adding that extra bit of quality and bravery in the tackles. Annie and AJ were being called upon too often for comfort, putting in challenges to stop the Rushden build up, but we were nervily hanging on now. Emilia’s Achilles was hurting her again and so her match was over before we’d got to half time. A change of formation with Lexie in goal and Shannon up top. Pauline’s quality on the ball creating chances now. But the half time whistle came and in the heat we were happy for the rest.

Both teams went straight at it in the second half. Nice movement from all the girls out there. A really even game with the chances building for both teams. Rushden beat our offside and their striker was clean in with only Lexie stood in the middle of that massive goal, but the strike was too close to Lexie and we were happy to see her collect it up. Then a Tes Pauline combo in the middle, slipped on to Kate to turn the ball into Shannon’s run. A neat finish into the corner by her and we had a cushion. But Rushden kept coming. Mads into goal now and time and again we saw Annie and AJ usher their runners wide and the shots came to nothing. As we pushed for another goal, a mix up and the Rushden winger was away down out left side and continued onwards towards our goal, firing an unstoppable shot. Only one behind and with their tails up, Rushden had all the threat now. It was all hands on deck in defense now for us. By the end we were hanging on a bit and Rushden might fairly feel a bit disappointed not to have found the equaliser before that final whistle blew.

Really great performances by both teams. Although a bit stressful, these are the games we love playing in, and big credit to the Rushden players and coaches for yet another cracking match up. Well done girls!

Great to be back to football, and what a start for Coton U15 Girls against, new to the Cambs League, Dersingham.

A nervy start, with our midfield losing possession too often. But a solid defensive performance by the ever dependable AJ, and an outstanding display from Annie who’s been too hot to handle all through preseason. We’re expecting great things from her this season. With super alert Cha between the sticks, no way in for Dersingham after their early pressure. And then the girls kicked on. A Tes Kate combo, on to Mads to slip in Shannon for a calm finish. Nice combinations with Kate and Pauline taking over midfield, again Shannon through round the keeper but this time brought down. Shannon stepped up to slot the simple penalty. Lia on now and bringing with her those big throws to send us forward. Drag back from Kate and reverse pass to Emilia, open on the left, to run in and bang into the top corner. Another turn by Kate, bossing that midfield, cross-field ball past everyone for Alice to run onto and hammer first time into the back of the net. Perfect ball by Mads into Alice, and calm strike in off the far post. Mads one-two with Kate and a floated cross that deceived everyone and dropped into the net. Bam overlapping Emilia cut back for the one-two, first touch past the defender. Crying out for a right foot finish, which (left footed) Bam duly accepted, dispatching near post past the diving keeper. Quality goal. And that was only the first half! Out we came again after the break, Pauline collecting the keeper’s clearance, slipped into Emilia run for and great finish. Then some individual mastery from Mads; waiting on halfway for the through ball, she collected out wide, ran to the corner drawing the defenders in, past one, teasing another and in now, across the box, as the keeper came out to block, a bullet was unleashed into the net. Pauline on fire now, brilliant touch to bring the ball down and immediate defence-splitting pass for Emilia to run onto. With time to think and the keeper coming out, Emilia slotted her finish into the far corner. Emilia brilliant again, turning on halfway and then came the pace, charging through and banging in another. Emilia one-two with AJ on the edge of the box and a poked finish. Bam overlapping again, whipped the ball into AJ, pacey, live and direct, round the keeper to thunder her finish. Hand ball, but ref called play and Pauline was first to react, twinkle toes, magic feet, round four defenders and ball to Seyma. Her lovely clip to another Emilia run who slotted into the corner for her sixth! Time for one more, a Bam ball back to Tes, so far out, and where did this come from? A Rocket of a shot, no chance for the keeper and off the bottom of the crossbar, down and back up into the roof of the net. A screamer!

What a way to start the season! Well done girls 👍⚽️

Final game of the season for the U14 Girls in the midweek kickoff on Wednesday evening against Newmarket. With the league already won, this was an opportunity to give everyone a runout and try out some new positions. But with a Newmarket side as standout performers this season having won promotion last season and well and truly cementing their position in the A-league, not to mention the Golden Boot still in play, plus overall team pride at stake, this wasn’t going to be a relaxed evening kickabout. Big respect to Newmarket, treating our girls to a guard of honour for our title win. And then both teams went at each other from the off as we watched another brilliant game to end the season.

A tight first half, with some nice movement, tackling and passes being made by both teams. AJ at centrehalf, setting the tone with those trademark crunching challenges and making sure their quick strikers didn’t get a sniff. She’s had a brilliant first season at Coton and it’s hard to remember the team without her power and pace, constantly mopping up the opposition threat. Charlotte had not felt well before this one, but she put in an outstanding performance between the sticks, her kicking, in particular, fantastic today. Ever alert, collecting balls on the edge of her box, or kicking from outside when needed. Annie was on the right of our back three and her calmness under pressure and strength in the challenge was on display again today. Playing her first full season, whilst still helping out the U15s when needed, meant lots of football for her, and she has been a great addition to the team with her versatility anywhere in defence or midfield. On the other side, Bam has had an incredible season. She goes from strength to strength every week, getting in those tackles when needed, stepping out and linking play down the wing. Really well played all season Bam! In the middle we set up with Mads and Ilazki. Ilazki is another player new to the team this season, but it was clear from all the way back in early August when we started preseason that not only was she going to improve the team with her great ability, bravery, touch, picking out a pass, popping up with goals, all that, but also that she was great fun, and has become a very popular teammate amongst the group. A brilliant addition and we’re really happy she chose to join us. To say Mads has been a pivotal reason the title rests at Coton this season would be understating her contribution. Her form has never dipped since back in September. Chipping in with 15 goals (from defensive midfield!), driving her team on in those tough fixtures. We’ve run out of superlatives for her, but a truly wonderful captain and immense talent with a football (that you rarely see her without!) Starting ahead of Mads and Ilazki, in the 8, Pauline was treating us to another incredible performance. She is so silky with the ball, very quick feet, confidence when running, and rarely makes a bad decision when releasing it. Her link up play is second to none in the group, 7 goals this season, including some all important ones in the big games, and honestly a joy to watch when she’s running with that ball, glued to her feet. On the other side, and another debut season, with Lexie having only played a handful of matches but giving us a taste of what she can offer. Some nice skill by Isla set Lexie up to slam in our opening goal, which brought her goal tally to 9 - a very impressive 1 per game, and with strength and pace to burn, we are excited to see what Lexie can bring when playing every week in the group. Again a player who is great fun in training, puts in the effort but also keeps everyone entertained at the same time(!) Moving out wide on the left now, India was charging up and down that wing like she has all season. Goals win football matches, and when we waved goodbye to top-scoring Julie last season we wondered where those goals might come from. But India has stepped up to not only fill those shoes but to equal last seasons goal tally of 22, which at the time of writing puts her in first place for the league golden boot. More impressive then that goals are not the only string to her bow, being one of our most skilful and creative players, right up there with the number of assists and all season a constant threat to defences. Starting up top were Shannon and Isla. Isla making her first start in the team, in only her second game. Since joining the group just before Christmas for training, she quickly showed what she brings to the table with good feet, turn of pace and vicious strike. A really nice layoff to Lexie for our first goal and more to come from her for sure. Shannon has been revelling in the free role, number 10 like her shirt, this season. Popping up in the spaces for the buildup, much improved with quick passing, tracking back to help defend, and fox in the box with neat first time finishes taking her goals into double figures for the season. Halfway into the first half we rolled a big change with Tes, Lia, Kate, Alice, Emilia and Amelie coming on. Tes has had a great season. Often playing alongside AJ in the centre of defence, her composure to take a touch and play out always helps to settle the team and stop us rushing the play. Her speed and strength to get across the opposition strikers has broken down many attacks and her confidence is growing to step out with the ball now too. Although injury meant she missed a chunk of the middle of the season, having her back in the team since February has made a big difference in those important games in the run in to the title. Lia over on the right of defence has been growing into a new role there, giving her an opportunity to get involved in the buildup with her quick first-time passing, or making those important interceptions. Unfortunately for Lia her injury at the start of the season meant she wasn’t part of that early momentum as we took our preseason fitness into the first couple of months, but she still came to support the girls in every game, which epitomises what Lia is about: an awesome teammate whether on or off the pitch, and super popular amongst the group. Kate sat in in the holding role next to Amelie. She has had a really brilliant season, pretty much able to play anywhere on the pitch, scoring and assisting goals. Shows great discipline when asked to sit, and great energy when asked to play forward. She’s another player who has helped out the U15s when asked, and gives 100% in matches and in training. Having players like Kate in the group is what wins titles. Alongside her Amelie, like Isla, playing in her second game for Coton having been training with us every week, is a very exciting prospect. More match time needed to help her understand the rhythm of our game, but already we can see a very special talent in Amelie. Touch, quick thinking, weight of pass, she has it all. Not least demonstrated by a quality turn and pass slipped in for India to chase, cut back across the defender and fire in for our 2nd goal. On the left side, Emilia was now zipping up and down the wing, giving Indie a runout up top. Emilia has had a really solid season, so quick and able to carry the ball at pace, regularly being chosen as player of the match by opposition teams, scoring lots of goals, and playing on both wings either defensively when we up against teams with pace or further forward when we are looking to pressure defences. Her energy and enthusiasm is infectious and she is a massive reason why the team have done so well. On the right, Alice was now commanding that wing. You can see that opponents hate playing against Alice, she is quick, strong and plays right tight up against the defenders, always looking to slip balls to teammates or charge into the box. Having her in the team this season has given us a completely different way to play, and her 14 goals, multiple assists, and overall hold up and link up play has been outstanding. Quick mention also to Katty, who hasn’t been able to play that many games this season and wasn’t able to be at this one, but who’s contribution, especially in the early parts of the season when we had many injuries in the side did not go unnoticed. Very quick feet, a lovely touch and another popular player. Finally a mention to Seyma, who really plays mainly in the U15s but has helped out in a few games this season with her boundless energy and tackling. Massive improvement from her over the course of this season and we know she has had a fantastic season with her U15 team.

Newmarket were fully in this game, only 2 behind and creating chances that had to be carefully defended. We wondered how the second half would pan out, given both teams had secured their league positions, Newmarket in a very respectable fourth place - with only cup winners’ Netherton, last season’s League winners’ Cambs City, and us ahead of them. As it was, our girls stepped on the gas. Feet too quick for the defenders, Indie was fouled way out on the left side, but her free kick was blasted high over everyone including the retreating keeper for her second of the game and a brilliant 22 goals for the season. Following pressure from Emilia, Shannon stole the ball, driving into the area and firing a shot in at the near post. 17 goals for Shannon this season is a brilliant return and very well deserved for her constant running and clever arrival in the danger areas. With only minutes remaining, Alice was back on and playing in her normal position up front. Good pressure from Kate, then Mads and the ball fell to Alice to wriggle through and fire into top bins for goal number 14 for her.

The game was done, the season was done. And we’ve all thoroughly enjoyed it! Some class moments throughout, and smiles from everyone involved. Well done girls, you’re amazing!…But now what are we going to do on Saturday mornings for the next four months!?! 🤔👍⚽️

Coton U14 Girls demonstrated great bouncebackability, after the disappointment of the midweek cup final defeat, to win the league in style today. A first ever league title for a team that has season on season been in the conversation, but never quite made it over the line. That changed today!

The St Ives pitches were in great condition but the morning sun meant our warm up was lacking a bit of intensity. We eased into the game, controlling possession but unable to fashion much. Limited to long shots by the St Ives defensive line, it was quickly becoming clear their keeper was something special. A nervousness started to creep in on the bench, and on the pitch our girls were rushing the passing and guilty of not looking after the ball. A changed formation today, with Shannon and Kate up top. Indie and Emilia providing the width with Pauline in front of Mads and Ilazki in the middle. Our back three of Bam, AJ and Annie looked fully in command, and Cha very comfortable between the sticks. Suddenly a nice break by Emilia and ball back across for Kate to play in Shannon for a nice finish, but as the celebrations began, the girls spotted the lino’s flag was up, and the goal was ruled out. Now a flurry of wasted efforts, the girls looking a bit panicked, St Ives defending well, or their keeper equal to every shot. We’ve been this close in the past only to fall at that final hurdle. Was this going to be one of those days? But then, brilliant skill and vision by Ilazki, picking out Shannon to turn and slide a ball to Kate whose sublime first touch gave her plenty time to pick her spot, in off the post that no keeper could have got to. A water break was needed in the heat and this was an opportunity to introduce Lia and Tes to the game. The single goal didn’t feel enough in a game like this where one error would cost us so much. The St Ives keeper had a massive kick and the high ball wasn’t easy to judge or deal with on a hard dry pitch. Fortunately Cha was on her game as normal today, out quickly to the through balls and calmly(!), collecting in those high bouncing balls. With Mads dictating play and Pauline’s close control running at pace, we didn’t look like this game could go against us, but in football, one goal never feels comfortable. Alice came on up front and immediately changed the dynamic, with the St Ives defence now having to deal with strength and power. India and Emilia were regularly getting in behind their fullbacks now, and had the half gone on much longer, we felt like another goal would have come.

The nervousness of the first half was quickly a distant memory in the second, with the girls starting to move the balls around quickly in the way we’ve become used to. Pauline received a ball from Tes, drove forward for a 1-2 with Kate and the ball threaded to Shannon’s run for an outside of the foot finish. More magic feet by Pauline, and another pass slipped in to Shannon for another great finish. Annie into midfield now, with Mads moving up top. An India corner, and a Shannon controlled finish before signalling her approval to set-piece coach Andy, proud to see his training field work coming off. Mads occupying the attention of their defenders was opening spaces for the rest of the team. Now more Coton dominance on the ball, an Indie-Kate combination, with Indie skinning the defender and forcing a good save but Alice on hand for a tap in with the follow up. AJ into midfield with Lia leading the backline, with Bam and Tes either side. Ilazki to Pauline, a dribble through the defence and a curling effort but the keeper was again there for a quality block, pushing over the bar. Kate again with an assist, feeding Indie to go through, a touch left, a touch right, the keeper making herself big but Indie’s cheeky finish through the legs was top quality. Time running out but time for one last Indie corner, and the set piece routine coming off again; a poked Shannon finish for her fourth and our seventh.

The gulf between the top and bottom teams was evident in the end today, but fair play to St Ives, they’ve improved a lot since we played them at the start of the season, and I’m sure their coaches and supporters will be proud that they weren’t going to make it easy for us today. If we wanted that title, we were going to have to work for it. But that is what we did! Congratulations to all the teams this season. It’s been a brilliant league with every team capable of taking points off each other and some fantastic football played. Couldn’t be prouder to have been a part of it, and it’s the icing on the cake for our girls to walk away league winners this season 👍⚽️

So proud of Coton U14 Girls playing for the first time in a cup final this evening against Netherton. A brilliant start and some nice flowing football by our girls, but Netherton held out, defended well and started to come back into the game. As is normally the way between these two teams it was a tense affair for pretty much all of the rest of the game with very little between the sides and no clear chances. As the match looked to be heading to penalties, unfortunately for us, after some Netherton pressure inside our box they managed to score a scrappy one with the ball trickling over our line. The last 10 mins was all us, the girls upping the tempo, looking for that equaliser. But wasn’t to be today. A great experience for both teams and big well done to Netherton. They’ve had a great season and deserved something from it, even if at the expense of our girls. Massive thank you to Dash Aviation Europe, for the super-cool kits our girls wore today. And to all the parents and supporters who cheered our girls on. Even as runners up, it was a great experience and now we’ve got a taste for it, we’ll no doubt want to be back here again 👍⚽️ ... A massive game in the run-in this morning at Coton Rec for the U14 Girls against AFC Rushden & Diamonds Women & Girls C.I.C. Both teams play in cup finals this coming week, and you could sense the importance to put in good performances. And for Coton, sitting behind City and Netherton in the league, but with games in hand, the points in this game were a must for their title hopes. So plenty to play for and lots at stake.

This was the fourth meeting this season between the two teams, one league game, one cup game and a friendly already, so we know each other well and the games are always tense and close. Rushden started the game with their unique playing style, employing a sweeper ahead of a great keeper and behind a quality back line, playing out with confidence brilliantly to a strong midfield and quick attack. Coton similarly moved the ball through the lines looking for powerful hold up by Alice or threading balls into the runs of India and Emilia on the wings, but maybe not with the pace and precision we’ve become used to from our girls. The overnight downpour meant this game was in doubt as puddles had formed, but some early morning pitch work sorted that and by kickoff, the pitch was looking decent and the clear skies added to a lazy feel to both the warmup and early phases for Coton. Without creating anything clearcut, Rushden on the other hand had arrived meaning business and had the lions share of the opening period, and it took strong defensive work by AJ, Tes, Katty and Bam, and Cha alert to the through balls to ensure we didn’t concede any chances. Rushden have some very good midfielders, capable of changing the course of games, so Mads and Pauline had a battle on their hands centrally in front of AJ and Tes, and with Lexie ahead of them in the hole. Bam and Pauline were starting to have some joy on the left with India causing problems for their right back, twisting back and forth before darting into the box, but Rushden defended strongly and we couldn’t make the breakthrough. However, the attention needed for India opened up spaces on the other side for Emilia. Her pace was causing problems for their left back and as she cut back in, a left foot strike whistled just wide. Then more nice work by Emilia and the ball found Alice who flicked out to Lexie to unleash a thunder strike that rattled the back of the net. First blood Coton, but possibly a little against the run of play and Rushden responded well. We were quickly on the back foot as Rushden worked the ball forward. AJ, then Tes cleared the ball. We struggled to get hold of the ball in midfield and our forwards were left stranded and out of the game. The introduction of Kate changed things up, and gave the team a new energy. An absolutely brilliant performance by Kate today, linking play, chasing down the ball and strong in the tackle. Very impressive. Katty made a big clearance, but hurt an already injured ankle, and had to come off. Time to bring on Ilazki and Lia for some calm and composure but still Rushden pressed forward and we were called upon to defend corner after corner. AJ slid into a tackle inside the box and the bench held their breathe but her timing was spot on and the ball cannoned out. But still Rushden came. Another chance for AJ to clear but this time a slip and the Rushden striker was in, shaping to shoot, but Tes to the rescue, charging in to cover and make the block and play out to Bam. The quality of the game was top from both sides, but please could we see more play in their half! Finally the breakthrough was made and Rushden got what their pressure deserved. The ball out wide on our left was worked across the box and their quality midfielder arrived to bang in an effort first time past a diving Cha. The first half was almost done, but the reintroduction of Lexie ignited our play. Great battling and then intelligent play by Kate sent Lexie bursting through and she lifted a shot in and over the keeper to put us one ahead at the break.

Rushden were back out early for the second half as we finished up our team talk. Our bench wondered how long our single goal lead might last with Rushden eager to turn the tide. But this was to be our half as the team collectively put in one of our best halves this season. Lia was right up for the fight today, not giving their winger a sniff and linking nicely with Kate in the middle or Emilia on the wing. AJ and Ilazki looking solid at the back. Indie’s trickery is a nightmare for defences and whilst by her standards maybe a quieter game, the attention needed to stop her opens up all kinds of space for the rest of the team and we were well and truly exploiting it now. A great dummy by Kate, turning their midfield and away, head up and the through ball to Emilia, in for the run. The Rushden Keeper was out to clear but only as far as Lexie. Her effort was blocked, but ever-alert Emilia won the loose ball and fed Alice. No space and defenders tight, but great footwork and Alice danced through with the keeper stranded, firing into an unguarded net. Bam had left early, so Tes was over at left back now. The combinations with Pauline were starting to ask questions of Rushden down that side, and it felt it was only a matter of time before something would come. Mads was having a stormer, no one can live with her when she’s in this mood and she was completely bossing the midfield now. Ball up to Lexie who’d spotted Emilia’s run, and lifted a pass over everyone. So much so, that the high bouncing ball fooled the keeper, and went in. A bit fortunate but we’ll take it and so did Lexie for her hat trick. No let up for Rushden now. Great shielding by Kate on edge of the box drew the foul, and Pauline banged the resulting free kick so hard that their Keeper could only get a light touch to before it found the back of the net. It was relentless now. Great first touch and then vision by Kate half way into their half, seeing the keeper off her line to send her shot up and over into the back of the net. But then a little reminder of the quality Rushden possess, pressure down our right and failure to clear properly meant the ball found their left winger. Her looping shot went over everyone, hard to judge for Cha as she retreated but too late as the ball was over her and in. Ilazki into midfield now to add that bit of quality on the ball, and Mads up top to increase the trouble we were causing the Rushden backline. The game was almost over but just time for that Tesni Pauline combo again; a lovely 1-2, Tes putting Pauline in space for a strike from miles out that the keeper had no chance with. Rushden will feel a little deflated as the scoreline was harsh on such a good side, but with the Coton girls playing the way they did in an almost faultless manner, any team would have struggled. Big smiles from our girls when that final whistle blew.

One point off the top two teams, with two games to play. This result is massive for us. We need to keep our feet on the ground and the cup game on Tuesday is the big one right now. But the girls have treated us to another fantastic display, so maybe just maybe we can dream a little now that that elusive title is within our sights 🙏👍⚽️

A first ever game for the new Coton U6 team yesterday at the Rec against an equally new Gamlingay team and both sets of players showing off their skills to the many enthusiastic supporters! Gamlingay with enough players for two teams(!) and Coton with a much leaner squad still looking for new players for U7s next season. Never a dull moment in this one, end to end, and with some top quality finishing and tough tackling. Great fun!…

Coton stormed to an early lead in the first quarter; Jacob between the sticks with a clean sheet, James and Huen-Yi the dynamic duo in defence, with Flavio and Gus combining up front for a double Gus hat trick. Quality stuff! In the second, Jacob out on the pitch with Gus taking a turn in goal. Archie and Flavio worked hard in the middle, with Jacob stepping alongside Huen-Yi at the back. But with the Powerplay rule in full effect, the pitch felt crowded with the extra two Gamlingay players, and as Flavio and Archie pressed for more goals, the hit-on-the-break undid us as the Gamlingay striker opened his account for the day. This lifted Gamlingay spirits and they started to create more chances. Nice positioning by Gus on the edge of the box meant an early taken shot went wide, then another chance was stopped on the line by a retreating Jacob. But before the halftime whistle blew, Gamlingay had pulled another back, so the third quarter would start with them having only one extra player. Anna was on now to chase the ball wherever it went and make those tackles to win us the ball back. But Gamlingay had the bit between their teeth and a determination to get back in it. A couple of good saves by Archie, now in goal, but the pressure was mounting and finally told with another well taken goal. If the tide was turning, Jacob had other ideas; a nice James tackle fed Jacob and he stormed forward to bang in a brilliant shot and extend our lead. Gamlingay quickly hit back, running into our box, and a collision meant the penalty was awarded. The Gamlingay striker stroked his shot, but Archie was equal to hit, calmly scooping it up and setting us back on the attack with his throw out to Flavio wide on the wing. Final quarter now. Gamlingay upped the pressure and despite the best efforts of Gus and Jacob creating chances, their defence held firm. Huen-Yi put in a great performance in goal, but we were hit on the break twice more before that final whistle.

A real treat for everyone involved. Lots of very proud parents and supporters, and big smiles on the faces of all the players. Big thank you to Gamlingay for making the trip over to us and we look forward to playing you again soon 👍⚽️

Seems ages since we last played, so there was a bit of apprehension from the bench as Coton U14 Girls faced up this morning against an ever improving Chesterton team, who beat us in our recent meeting in February. Having had very little football played over the past few months, the pitches at the Rec were looking good, and the light morning rain meant the ball zipped nicely on the surface. Perfect for football.

From kickoff the game quickly settled into what would be the pattern on the game. Bags of possession for our girls, and Chesterton looking to hit us on the break with their powerful midfield and quick wingers. In defence, AJ and Tes had formed a nice partnership, with Tes calmly looking to slot passes in to the midfield or out wide, and AJ breaking down the Chesterton chances and bravely putting her body on the line. Lia and Bam starting as fullbacks built up nicely on both sides, slipping balls up to the wings. Pauline and Ilazki battled hard in the middle and had that touch of class when needed for the little exchanges with Alice up top. Charlotte was to have a quiet day in terms of making saves but the team neatly involved her as we played out; her distribution different class today. Ever dependable Captain Mads kept the whole thing ticking, frustrating Chesterton, giving them no time on the ball and putting in a masterclass of holding midfield play. Alice had had plenty of balls fired into her and used her strength to feed Indie and Emilia on the wings. This time though, deep in the Chesterton box, dancing between the defenders, she laid the ball back to Emilia wide on the edge of the box, who chipped a left foot blinder giving their retreating keeper no chance. That goal settled the remaining nerves and now we really began to play. The chances kept coming and Chesterton made blocks and saves to keep us from going further ahead. Annie and Seyma on now to add power and pace, and it wasn’t long before Seyma gave us a reminder of what she can do, first winning a ball she had no right to, then skipping across on the edge of the box she bent a mean curler through the defence and into the far post. Magic! Next up, before half time, Alice powered a shot centrally that the keeper could only parry, giving Alice her chance to make sure with the follow up. So 3-0 at the break but with a Chesterton still a threat on the break, this game wasn’t done.

A quick stop, both sets of girls keen to get going again. Chesterton looking for a goal to get back in it and our forwards brimming with confidence, wanting to increase the lead. Shannon up front and Alice on the wing, changed the threat. The ball moving quickly and it felt like a chance was coming. But then a moment of sloppiness at the back. A soft corner given away and then failure to clear our lines was punished as the ball fell to the one Chesterton player we wouldn’t want it to, Ella smashing in the finish. But Pauline wasn’t to be fazed, upped her game and directing play in the middle. Organising the play, pointing the passes before they were made. Quality. Forward we go, more pressure on the Chesterton back line. India continually skinning her fullback and opportunities kept coming. A ball out and goal kick taken but, ever alert, Mads stepped out to win it first, a one-two and ball across to Shannon for a first time banger restoring our 3 goal cushion. Not long to go, but more great play, the ball shifted once then twice on the edge of the Chesterton box and finding Emilia who cracked another stunner on her left for our 5th. The clock was almost done, but no game is complete without an immense drive by Alice, powering in on goal and thundering her strike against the woodwork, again!!

Great to be back on the pitch. Chesterton played their part today, but this was their final game of the season, whereas for us, three more weeks of big games, to see how high up this league we can go, and a cup final too. Everything in our hands. Great work girls!! 👍⚽️

Coton U14 Girls made the return visit to Cambourne having beaten them comfortably at home in October. Despite this, Coton were taking nothing for granted having recently been humbled away at Chesterton and having noted a big uptick in Cambourne's recent results. And, like the game at Chesterton, this match was to be played on a small pitch against a physical, direct team with some exceptional individual talent.

Coton understood the challenge at hand and played a really solid, patient game: controlling possession and creating enough chances to win the game comfortably and put the coaches and parents at ease. Of course this never happened as the profligacy of the Coton attack combined with the determination of the Cambourne defence and the excellence of their goalkeeper, meant that the outcome was never certain until the final whistle. Alice, extra motivated by playing against her old team, had another outstanding game leading the line for Coton - battling against an uncompromising Cambourne defence and generally coming out on top - only the post, the crossbar and Vicki in sticks for the home side stopping her from scoring. Cambourne were physical and direct but when Coton were able to get the ball down and start playing they looked really threatening with Mads, Pauline, Shannon and Ilazki playing with accuracy and intelligence to work the ball into the space behind the Cambourne left back for India to exploit with her pace. After a couple of attempts saved at the near post and numerous crosses out in the middle, eventually, towards the end of the first half, the inevitable happened and the deadlock was broken with India firing in a chance across the keeper. Coton had played slightly uphill in the first half and with the breeze against them and credit must go to their defence styling alert in the face of a barrage of long balls bouncing awkwardly and unpredictably. Every time AJ and Tes were up to the task, calmly getting the ball under control and either clearing to safety or playing a simple pass to a teammate, as the situation demanded. Their control gave Emilia and Bam the confidence and licence to push forward down the flanks and both of them made excellent contributions both in defence and attack.

An injury to AJ meant a bit of a reshuffle at half time with Mads dropping to centre back and Lia going to right back. Annie also came into the midfield to offer some extra physicality. The second half carried on in much the same vein as the first with Coton controlling possession and territory but struggling to breach the Cambourne defence. India was sent through 1 on 1 a couple of times but the ball ran away from her and Shannon, Alice, Pauline, Bam and Ilazki all had shots from the edge of the box which were either saved by the keeper or whistled narrowly wide. One nil is a dangerous scoreline and although Tes and Lia snuffed out any danger that came their way and cha barely had a save to make, the longer the score remained at one nil, the nervier things became. After several forays by Emilia and Pauline down the right which resulted in half chances and a succession of corners, the second goal eventually came. Emilia found India in space on the left via some sublime skill from Shannon and her left footed strike deflected off a defender and looped over the keeper. Not quite job done, but nearly. The rest of the half played out without too much drama thanks to a vital last ditch challenge from Lia on the Cambourne striker, having tracked back brilliantly. Prior to that Mads and Tes had been majestic in defence despite the big loss of our defensive leader AJ at half time. Cha didn't have a lot to do today but her kicking and distribution were consistently on point as we have come to expect this season. Annie and Ilazki really got control of the midfield by winning the first and second balls time and time again. Last shout out goes to Bam though who put in real shift and created the moment of the match with a Cruyff turn on the edge of her own box to escape 2 attackers. Could have gone horribly wrong (and please never do that again!) but was genius.

Thanks to Cambourne for hosting a cracking game and good luck to them for the remainder of the season 👍⚽️

Coton U14 Girls made the return visit to Cambourne having beaten them comfortably at home in October. Despite this, Coton were taking nothing for granted having recently been humbled away at Chesterton and having noted a big uptick in Cambournes recent results.
